ISCSI

iSCSI (Internet SCSI) is a protocol of the Couche application allowing the transport of orders SCSI on a network TCP/IP.

Main features

iSCSI was standardized by IETF in April 2004.

It is a protocol of encapsulation: it is used to transport a protocol moreover high level, in this case protocol SCSI.

History

In the middle of the years '90, research is launched to study feasibility to transport SCSI on Ethernet. Inter alia companies, IBM seeks several solutions: SCSI on Ethernet, IP and TCP/IP. In 1998, a first prototype of SCSI on TCP/IP is available. After establishment of Cisco-IBM alliance in 1999, these two companies decide to submit to the IETF a proposal baptized iSCSI and based on the research carried out at IBM. This proposal is submitted in 2000. In 2001, IBM purely leaves the first equipment storage iSCSI, the IP Storage 200i, and Cisco the router of storage SN 5420, footbridge between iSCSI and Fiber Chanel. Microsoft publishes its first pilots for Windows in June 2003.

Footbridges iSCSI

A footbridge iSCSI is equipment carrying out conversion between the pile of protocol iSCSI and Fiber Chanel crushes it.
