ISAD (G)

The general and international Standard of archivistic description or in International English Standard Description-General Archival, commonly indicated under the initials ISAD (G) , was published officially by the International counsel of the files in 1994. The last version goes back to 1999.

Its objective is to allow the diffusion of information on the contents and the interest of the funds of files as well between services of files as bound for the researchers, thanks to homogeneous descriptions, common files of authority and agreements on the interchange formats.

It rests on three principles:

  • validity of the concept of funds and thus of the principle of respect of the funds,

  • correspondence enters the levels of classification and the levels of description,
  • hierarchical connection of descriptions from one level to another.

It comprises 26 descriptive elements whose combination makes it possible to describe any archivistic unit. These elements are divided into 6 zones (complementary identification, context, contents, access terms, sources, notes). The first zone, which is most important, includes/understands the dimension of the described unit, the heading which in short the contents, extreme dates, the selected level of description and the indications on volume of the described unit (linear measuring, many parts, etc).

ISAD (G) does not treat material management, an indexing and writing rules and the vocabulary.

The International counsel of the files continues his work of standardization. He published in 1995 an International standard on the archivistic notes of authority relating to the communities, the people and the families, generally indicated by the initials ISAAR (CPF) correspondent with his english language version, whose new version was diffused in 2004. He currently works with the development of a standard on the description of the institutions preserving of the files (indicated by English initials ISIAH), whose provisional version will be presented to the international Congress of the files with Kuala Lumpur in 2008.
