IRB Sevens World Series

(Translation of the English article)

IRB Sevens World Series , officially known like IRB Sevens before the season 2006-07 and sometimes called World Sevens Series , is a series of international tournaments organized for the first time for the season 1999-00. The tournaments organized by the International Rugby Board make meet national teams of Rugby to seven.

The Series were created initially to develop a competition of elite between the various nations of Rugby and to develop the Rugby to seven and to make of it a profitable commercial product for IRB. For the season 2005-06, the tournaments were diffused during 1147 hours including 530 hours of direct and retransmis in 136 countries for an audience cumulated of more than 475 million.

All the teams contribute for the title of Sevens World Series by accumulating points based on their results in the various tournaments of the season. The tournaments take place all around the sphere. In 2005-06, the tournament more considered, HongKong Sevens, remade her appearance in the competition after one year of absence, for organization of the World cup of Rugby to seven, and saw gaining the team of the Fiji in March 2005.

The Rugby to seven is an alternative of the Rugby to fifteen which is thus played with a team of seven players instead of the fifteen usual. The matches shorter (7 or 10 minutes per half-time) and are based on a fast play and big spaces. The tournaments are traditionally exploited two days (except Hong-Kong Sevens which is exploited three days). It is a faster play, with scores higher than the Rugby to fifteen and simpler rules what explains its attraction near the spectators. Spaces give free course to individual competences and superb races in particular to the athletic players of the teams of the Fiji, of New Zealand and Samoas which preach a spectacular play. New Zealand and the Fiji are traditionally the strongest teams but these last years, the teams of Australia, of the Samoa, of England, of South Africa, Argentina and France gained tournaments.

Format of the season

In a tournament, 16 teams are in string (24 in HongKong). In each tournament, the teams are divided into hens of 4 teams which meet each one once. The points are allotted according to the result of the match as follows:
  • Victoire: 3 points
  • Equality: 2 points
  • Demolished: 1 point
  • Fixed price: 0 points

In the event of equality one decides between the teams according to the following rules:

  1. the winner of the match of the 2 teams with equality
  2. the difference in marked points and receipts during the hen
  3. the difference in marked tests and receipts during the hen
  4. Drawing lot

Four trophies reward each tournament (except in HongKong): Cup which rewards the winner of the tournament, Punt, Bowl, and the Shield (in HongKong the Shield is not given). Each trophy is given at the end of the tournament.

The 2 best teams of each hen joined the Cup part. The 4 losers of the quarterfinal join Punt. Bowl is disputed by the third of each hen and the Shield is disputed the last teams of each hen.

In HongKong, the 6 winners of hens plus the 2 best second join Cup. The participants in Punt are the 8 better remaining teams and the 8 last teams join Bowl.

Points

The classification of the season is determined by the points gained with each tournament. For a tournament with 16 teams (all sleeves of the season except HongKong), the points are distributed as follows:

  • Finalist of Cup: 16 points
  • Half finalists of Cup: 12 points
  • Victorious of Punt (5th): 8 points
  • Finalist of Punt: 6 points
  • Half finalists of Punt: 4 points
  • Victorious of Bowl (9th): 2 points

For the tournament of HongKong (24 teams) the points are distributed as follows:

  • Victorious of Cup: 30 points
  • Finalist of Cup: 24 points
  • Demi finalists of Cup: 18 points
  • Quarter finalists of Cup: 8 points
  • Victorious of Punt (9th): 4 points
  • Finalist of Punt: 3 points
  • Half finalists of Punt: 2 points
  • Victorious of Bowl (17th): 1 points

If two or several teams are with equality at the end of the season one decides between them according to the following rules:

  1. the difference in marked points and receipts during the season
  2. the number of test during the season
  3. If there is still no difference, the teams are regarded as ex æquo.
