II ( Ijo in Swedish) is a municipality the North-West of the Finland, in the area of Ostrobotnie of North.
Its curious name (to be noted that the double letter is clearly marked in Finnois) would come from the Lappish word idja , meaning place where the night is spent.
The common mark the mouth of the river Iijoki, one of the principal rivers of the country. The commune borders the Gulf of Bothnia in a low and sandy coast, with many low island and sand banks to the broad one. The interior is largely forester and marshy.
Its privileged position at the bottom of the Gulf of Bothnia was the reason of its early development, as of the 14th century. It is then an important commercial town, but it will lose this statute at the 17th century vis-a-vis the lately founded competition of Oulu a little more in the south. It is industrialized as of the end of the 18th century, initially in the glassmaking then in the work of the Bois.
Crossed by main road 4 (E75), it has currently formed part of the outer suburbs of Oulu (35 km of center in center) and sees for a few years its population growing again. To January 1st 2007, the municipality of Kuivaniemi will be attached to him, always forming under the name of a II commune of 1.550 km ² and 9.000 inhabitants.
In addition to Kuivaniemi in north, the common neighbors are Yli-Ii in the east and Haukipudas in the south.
