IG Metall

IG Metall (Industriegewerkschaft Metall) is a German Trade union cash 2,4 million trade unionists, which thus places it like the second larger trade union of the country after Ver.di. It has its seat with Francfort-sur-le-Main and represents the workmen of metallurgical industry, the textile and clothing, wood and the plastic. Indeed, the Gewerkschaft Textil und Bekleidung (GTB) , trade union of the textile and clothing, joined IG Metall on April 1st, 1998; the Gewerkschaft Holz und Kunststoff (GHK) , trade union of wood and the plastic, joined IG Metall on January 1st, 2000. IG Metall is member of the Deutscher Gewerkschaftsbund, of the European Federation of the metallurgists and the International federation of the organizations of workers of the metallurgy.

History

  • 1891 : Creation of German association of the metallurgists (Deutschen Metallarbeiter-Verbands), the organization founder of the most important IG Metall. The DMV developed quickly to become the largest German trade union independent under the Empire and the Weimar Republic

  • 1949: Foundation of " IG Metall für die Bundesrepublik Deutschland" (industrial trade union metal for the German Federal republic)
  • 1949: Congress founder of the DGB
  • 1967: 40 hours week in the metallurgy
  • 1978: Burden for the 35 weekly hours in iron and steel industry
  • 1984: Burden for the 35 weekly hours in metallurgical industry (without success)
  • 1990: Adaptation by stages of the East-German collective agreements to the standards of West Germany
  • 1991: Unification of the trade unions of FRG and GDR
  • 1995: 35 hours introduction weekly into metallurgical industry
  • 2003: The strike for the 35 hours in East Germany is mainly a failure. Into the iron and steel industry and many other companies, the 35 hours are introduced gradually and successfully (in the governmental indifference).
