Plougourvest is a common department of the Finistere, in the area Brittany, in France.

ETYMOLOGY and HISTORY of PLOUGOURVEST

Plougourvest comes from Breton “the ploe” (parish) and from Gourguest, saint Breton.

Plougourvest is an old primitive parish which formerly included the territories of Plougourvest and Landivisiau (its trève). Landivisiau depends on Plougourvest, until the Revolution. The parish of Plougourvest depends on évêché on Leon.

One finds names following: Plebegorvest (in 1260), Ploegorguest (in 1292), Ploeorguest (about 1330), Ploeourvest (about 1467), Ploeornest (in 1481) and Ploervest (in 1464 and 1516).

The Saint-Pierre church (- 17th century). It is about an irregular building, including/understanding a vessel of five spans with sides and finished by a chorus with polygonal bedside. The church is surmounted by a pretty tower to a gallery and two floors of bells deadened by an octagonal arrow with hooks: it relates to the southern buttress, the date of 1588. The bell carries the inscription T. Soueff me fecit lan 1706 . The southern side porch, furnished with the pediment with a statue with the Virgin Mary, date of 1616. The side door goes back to 1635. The interior of the church is restored in 1875. The high altar is surmounted by a beautiful retable with house of the 17th century, decorated low-reliefs where one sees the Sacrifice of Abraham, the Crowning of spines and the Deposition. The baldachin of the baptismal font goes back to 1667 and carries the inscription " Noble and worthy Louis de Cresolles vice-chancellor of this parish lan 1667 faict by us Y. Bourchis and Y. Kerfourn at the time Factories F. Tanguy and F. Riouall". The completion silver date reliquary of the 14th century. The stoup is gone back to 1720. The owners of the church, holy Pierre and holy Paul, have their statues in the sanctuary. With the northern furnace bridge, one finds a group of holy Anne and holy Joachim. With the furnace bridge midday, one finds a table of the Rosary and the statues of saint Jean Baptiste, SAINT LAURENT, saint Like and holy Damien. The church shelters also the statues of saint Alar, holy Herbot, holy Jacques the Major one, holy Joachim, holy Anne and the Virgin-Mother. To announce that the parish has two old banners of procession of the 17th century representing Christ in cross and holy Paul-Aurélien.

the vault Saint-Michel (- 20th century), dependence of the castle of Kervoanec; the martyrdom of the cemetery (1870); the cross Kroas Mengwenn or Menguen (the Middle Ages) of Goasnavalen; the cross rear Charel or Croas-rear-Chapel Kroas (14th century) of Saint-Matthieu; the cross Kroas Lambader (1550) of Lambader; the cross Kroas Tachen (- 19th century) of Villeneuve; the cross Kroas Nevez (- 16th century); other crosses or vestiges of cross: Coativelec (16th century), Guézou or Croaz-rear-It hlan, Kerduff (16th century), Croas-Kergurant (13th century), Croas-Kervellec (15th century), the cross of the church (Early middle ages), Croas-Spernen (the Middle Ages); the castle of Kervoanec (19th century). This castle replaced an old manor had in 1503 by a family of Kervoanec, in 1566 per Alain de Kerc' hoent or Kéréhorat, lord of Kergournadec' H, and in 1710 per Rene Corentin Allain, seneshal of Landivisiau. After 1780, it passes by alliance to the family Bizien de Lizart which bequeaths it to the family Quengo de Tonquédec, last owners. Near the manor the vault of Saint-Mathieu rises, old priory of the abbey of Saint-Mathieu of Finistere; the fountain Feunteun Wenn (17th century); the house of Lambader (16th century); 4 mills of which the mill of the stang;

To also announce:

- the old manor of Lannurien. Property since the 17th century of the family Barazer de Lannurien;
- the old manor of Roc' hglaz. Property in 1610 of François Geffroy, sior of Villeneuve, baillif de Lesneven;

FORMER NOBILITY of PLOUGOURVEST

At the time of the Reformation of 1443, Landivisiau and Plougourvest (Guigourvest) 7 noble count: Guyon de Coëtquelven (lord of the known as place), Olivier Glaziou, Herve de Landiviziau (sior of the known as place), Jean of Estang, Alain Nédélec, Jean Percevas (sior of Mesgouin) and Yvon Prigent (sior of Crechquelen). At the same Guillaume time Corre (of Plougourvest) is affirmed noble.

At the time of the convocation of the whole crowd and of évêché of Leon and châtellenie of Morlaix-Lanmeur in 1534, the parish of Plougourvest and its trève Landivisiau enter nothing any more but 6 noble: the lord of Coatmeur (François Tournemine), Allain Kercoant, Allain Anffroy, Herve Geffroy (sior of Rochglas), Yvon Coëtvoult and Olivier Clocheur (sior of Mesgouin).

Among the noble houses, also let us announce to Landivisiau: Goasca-Dougan, which belongs, in 1775, with the heirs to Marie Anne de Troarin, marries of François of Tullaie. Kerlouet which belongs to François Abgrall and Marie Rannou in 1695, then with J. Rannou in 1599 and finally with J. Pencréach and his/her sister in 1775. Kerroux which belongs to Nicolas Laurans (priest) in 1703, then with the children of Jean Marie Tanguy, sior of Kadoret, in 1768. The named farm " Noble" smallholding; and property of Guillaume Miorcec in 1645, then of Morice de Coatquelfen and finally of P. Laurens, priest, in 1697. The Mill with the Priests ( rear Millin Bellec ) which belongs to Jan Grall, sior of Bougeozen, in 1678, then in Guillaume the Draper, lord of Beaurepos in Guipavas.

With the “watch” (meeting of all the men-at-arms) of évêché of Leon received in Lesneven in 1481, one enters the presence of 8 noble of Plougourvest:

- Morice COËTQUELFEN (615 pounds of income): carrier of a brigandine, appears before principal rafter;
- Jehan COËTQUELFEN (20 books of income), absent;
- the lady of COËTMEUR (300 pounds of income), replaced by Jehan Solomon and Jehan Bogor: carrier of a brigandine, appears before an archer. It is about Catherine de Kerimel, marries of Jehan de Tournemine;
- Guillaume FAUGOUR (100 grounds of income), blind man, replaced by his Yvon son: carrier of a brigandine, appears armed with a vouge;
- Maistre Herve GEFFROY, patient, replaced by Guillaume Geffroy: carrier of a brigandine, appears armed with an axe;
- Tanguy JOSORN (100 grounds of income), absent;
- Marguerite KERCOANT (30 books of income), replaced by Jehan Coëtquelfen: carrier of a brigandine, appears armed with a vouge;
- Maistre Yves KERGOANAC (50 books of income): carrier of a brigandine, appears armed with a vouge.
