I-deas

I-deas (Acronyme of “ I ntegrated D esign E ngineering and has nalysis S oftware”) is a Logiciel of Conception computer-assisted and of finite element analysis.

This one was initially developed by students of the university of Cincinnati in 1967. First of all known under the name of supertab, it was initially marketed in 1982 by company SDRC ( S tructural  D ynamics  R esearch  C orporation) under the name of I-deas and CAEDS for the version distributed by IBM.

In 1993, a complete recasting of the core and interface do of them one of the very first systems of CAD using technology “ variationnelle ”: Démarche which aims at solving the constraints governing a draft in a simultaneous way (system of equations) in opposition to the systems known as “ paramétriques ” (list of ordered equations) as implemented in the software Pro/Engineer for example. This major change of the software is distributed under commercial name “ I-deas  Master-series ”.

The first versions of “ Master-Series ” function only on the systems Unix owners. Starting from version 5, a bearing for the environment Windows is proposed.

The current version (12/2005) is version 12.

I-deas is used in auto industry by manufacturers such as Ford, Nissan, Mazda, Jaguar, in aeronautics like in the industry of capital equipment.

In 2001, SDRC is repurchased by the giant of the data processing EDS which also repurchases the missing shares of the company UGS which markets then the rival software Unigraphics. EDS then amalgamates the two entities under the name of EDS  PLM  solutions then UGS  PLM  solutions . In May 2004, EDS whose results are not with the height of waitings of the analysts decides to separate from this new entity and resells this one under the name of UGS with three pension funds: Bain  Capital , Silver  Lake  Partners and Warburg  Pincus .

The product ranges of the two companies gradually are standardized and rationalized. Part CAD/CAE bears the new name of NX .

I-deas as such is thus brought to disappear for better reappearing within the continuation NX based on the core “Parasolid”.
