The Bataille of Iéna in 1806 is an important victory of Napoleon I {{er}} over the Prussian . After Austerlitz, Prussia had signed an alliance of circumstance with Napoleon (whereas they wanted to declare the war to him). But this alliance did not last, Prussia, in peace with France since 1795, decided to enter in war after provocations towards the French embassy of Berlin. The queen pushed in particular with the war.
Napoleon developed his usual skill: speed and audacity. The Prussian army, which still believes the first of Europe, is surprised in Iéna, after Napoleon had climbed on the plate of the battle by a daring operation. The Prussians divided their army into two bodies. Napoleon faces large Prussian army with 60.000 men, it has approximately 80.000 of them. The battle turns quickly to the advantage of Français ; the Prussians beat a retreat in an unquestionable disorder.
The disorder redoubles when the routed army meets the remainder of the Prussian army in escape. Indeed, at the same time, the army corps of the Davout marshal beat large Prussian army with Auerstaedt, in spite of its crushing numerical inferiority (1 against 2). The runaways mix and it is total panic. The army flees, continued by the French and disaggregates. In one day of battle and 15 days of continuation, the Prussian army is completely destroyed and demoralized. The fortresses as Stettin in front of Lasalle go without fighting. It is a terrible shock for Prussia and Germany. Prussia immediately reacts to examine the causes of its defeat and to be modernized to take up the French challenge. She avenges really this defeat flash only in 1870, and especially 1940.
