Içara

Içara is a city Brésil ienne Littoral southern of the State of Santa Catarina. It is located by a Latitude of 28º 42 ' 48" south and by a Longitude of 49º 18 ' 00" west, with a Altitude of 48 meters. Its population was estimated at: 56423 inhabitants in 2006. The municipality extends on 193 km ².

It belongs to the Carboniferous Metropolitan region.

General information

Içara has the second more important seaside resort of the State, Balneario Rincão , in population accommodated in summer, behind Balneário Camboriú - it accommodates more: 100000 tourists each year. These tourists are attracted by the long beaches of the littoral and the Lagoa back Esteves, one of the more big lakes of the south of the State.

History

The history of the city is marked by the construction of the Railway “Dona Tereza Cristina” in 1924, which crosses still today the city to transport the coal of Criciúma to Tubarão.

The urban development with the creation of the railroad, attracted many immigrants Italy NS, from the Azores, Polish and German coming from Criciúma and Urussanga. The area, still called at the time “km 47”, became Içara, a derivative of Içaroba or Giçara , two species of Palmier S which one found in great quantities in the area.

Içara is a municipality with whole share since the December 30th 1961.

Economy

The local economy is based on the Industrie and the Agriculture, the Tabac being the prevalent culture. Moreover, the city is known for its Miel, of which it is principal producing Brésil and which it exports towards the Europe and the Latin America. At the industrial level, the city produces plastics and raw materials for ceramic industry.
