Hydrography

The hydrography is the study and the description of the River and of stretch of water (Océan S, Mer S, Lac S…) that one can observe on the surface of the Ground. The term indicates also the whole of the rivers of a given area, organized in catchment areas (or catchment area).

It is also about the maritime Topographie which has the aim of raising the plan of the sea-bed and rivers, and to determine the various depths of water, the force of the currents and the tides, with an aim of establishing Carte S navy.

One allots to Pierre Desceliers, the cartographer Dieppois of the 16th century, the title of father of French hydrography because of his work on the matter.

One allots in the same way to Charles-François Beautemps-Bowsprit the title of father of modern hydrography, for his contribution of a method and rigorous techniques with this field, like with his work of exhaustive cartography of the French coasts. These methods are always used today, in spite of important technological developments.
