Hydroelectric stopping of Sélingué

The hydroelectric Stopping of Sélingué , located in the area of Sikasso at 140 km of Bamako and in the vicinity with the Guinean border , is one of the most important production centres of energy of the country. Of a total power of 44 megawatts, it produces annually approximately 200 GWh and allows the electric distribution of Bamako, Kati, Koulikoro, Ségou, Fana, Dioïla, Yanfolila and Kalana. It was brought into service in 1980 and rehabilitate between 1996 and 2001.

It was built on the river Sankarani, influential of the Niger. Its retaining tank forms the artificial lake of Sélingué of 430 km ² (and a volume of 2,2 billion m ³), which allows the cultures on the irrigated perimeters managed by the Office of rural development of Sélingué, as well as fishing (the supply of Bamako fish comes mainly from Sélingué). It is also used for the control of the risings.
