Hydroelectric stopping of Manantali

The hydroelectric stopping of Manantali was built on the Bafing, to 90 km in the south-east of Bafoulabé, in the area of Kayes to the Mali.

It is managed by the Organization for the development of the river Senegal (OMVS). It allows the electrical production, the Irrigation of 375.000 hectares grounds and the navigability of the river Senegal between St-Louis (Senegal) and Ambidédi (Mali).

The lake of selected covers a surface of 5.485 km ² for a volume of 11 billion m ³ of water. The average depth of 20,8 m and the maximum depth are of 50 Mr.

The project of the OMVS associates Senegal, the Mauritania and Mali. Contrary to its two neighbors, Mali does not have an important irrigable ground potential on banks of Senegal. Only installations carried out are small village irrigated perimeters. The production of electricity constitutes for Mali the main issue.
