Hydraulic ways in Wallonia

The Head office of the hydraulic Ways (D.G.2) of * the Walloon Ministry of the Equipment and Transport (M.E.T.) is charged to manage the inland waterways, the water ways nonaccessible to transport, the inner harbors, navigation, the locks, the stoppings, and hydrology.

inland waterways

The role of the inland waterways in all the areas is important for the transport of the goods and the economic development of the areas. This role is all the more crucial in Wallonia, that the Walloon inland waterways are located at the crossroads of Europe. They allow the junctions between France, Germany and the Netherlands, while passing by the Flanders, via the Bouchon of Lanaye and the Canal Albert. They give access to the seaports of Antwerpen, Zeebrugge, and Rotterdam.

The Walloon Economic council (CEW), during his creation in 1938, already puts in his priorities the transport policy (water, iron, road), the channel from Charleroi to Brussels, the improvement of navigation between Liege and Hainaut in direction of France, the stopper of Lanaye,… Transport by water allowed the important industrial development of the coal basins and iron and steel of Liege and Charleroi, for example.

The river transport, takes again strength, compared to road transport and railway, especially thanks to its economic advantage, less consumption of fuel thus less pollution, wants to say more ecological, its safety and its reliability is as many important assets.

The public Ministry of Labor Belgian relayed by the Ministry for the Equipment and Transport of the Walloon region were there not mistaken and invested since decades in the modernization of the network of the hydraulic ways in Wallonia. The current network accepts tonnages of 3.000 tons on the Meuse until Ivoz-Ramet, of 6.000 tons Yvoz-Ramet with Liege and 9.000 tons on the Canal Albert starting from the Monsin island in Liege.
