History of the frankness
Whalers

The beginnings of the frankness goes back to 1971 year, where the Worldwide association of hockey grants to Hartford a team which takes the name of Whalers of New England. As a one of the most stable teams of the AMH with the Oilers d' Edmonton, the Scandinavian of Quebec and the Jets of Winnipeg, Whalers join the National league of hockey when the AMH is forced to cease its activities. The Bruins of Boston, belonging to the LNH since good longer and also residing in New England, they make pressure so that the team changes name and the Whalers de Hartford are born. Unfortunately, the new version of Whalers never reaches the level of the team of the AMH.
In March 1997, the owner of Whalers, Peter Karmanos, announces that as from the next season, Whalers would not play any more in the Connecticut. Indeed, the team is then unable to negotiate the acquisition of a new skating rink in the town of Hartford. The decision of the new direction of the team is revealed in July: Whalers will play in the future in the Research Triangle of the North Carolina and the new center of the Entertainment and Sports Arena with Raleigh and the team will take the name of Hurricanes of the Caroline.

Beginnings
The removal was so suddenly and owing to the fact that the team was to take part as of the following season at the regular season, the owner of the frankness had to decide only name of the frankness without carrying out the traditional contest in the LNH to decide name of a team.Unfortunately for Hurricanes, the ESA is not yet operational and will not be it within two years and the only skating rink of hockey available in the area is the Dorton Arena , room 45 years old and with: 5100 places for the spectators. The room not being adapted to the matches of the LNH, the team are then forced to go to play its matches “residence” with Greensboro which is located at 90 minutes of Raleigh for its first two seasons as Hurricanes. The Monarchs of the Caroline of the American Ligue of hockey are then obliged to play their match elsewhere.
The room of the Greensboro Coliseum with: 21000 places, is then at this time the room of hockey of the LNH with the most places but unfortunately that serves more the Canes than another thing, since they are unable to fill the room: their fans not making the effort make 90 minutes of transport to come to see them playing and the fans local still not having directed the raising of prices of the ticket of to the passage of Monarchs of ECHL with the LAH in 1995. The average of spectators being lower than: 10000 people, the operation is according to the consent of Karmanos an error.
In 1998-99, the Canes manage to attract an average of: 12000 people. Within the team, the former player of Whalers, double victorious in 1991 and Season LNH 1991-92 of the Cut Stanley with the Penguins de Pittsburgh, Ron Francis is of return, it is associated with Keith Primeau and its about thirty goals and Gary Roberts harvest 178 minutes of pénlites. The team then gains the first place of the South-eastern division with eight points in advance over the seconds and reaches for the first time since 1992 the eliminatory Séries. Hurricanes lose with the first turn against the Bruins of Boston and the bad fate strikes the team whereas the defender, Steve Chiasson, dies continuation an accident whereas it was under the influence of alcohol.
Beginnings in the ESA
At the beginning of the season 1999-2000, Hurricanes can finally their beginning in their new skating rink, the ESA, but the results do not follow and they do not manage to be qualified for the series. In 2000-01, the team manages to rise with the eighth and last qualificative place for the series of the conference of the East, stealing this last place in Bruins. The Devils of the New Jersey champions in title of the former season at the head finish conference and eliminate Whalers in six matches. The latter have all the same the honor to push the series in six matches whereas they are led three matches to zeros. In spite of the defeat 5 goals with 1, crowd acclaims the players of the Caroline.
The first final of the Cut Stanley
The Canes make speak about them with the national scales for the first time at the time of the series of 2002. First of all, they gain the title of division while resisting a load of last minute of the Capitals of Washington. Once again, Hurricanes must face Devils of the New Jersey which is given favorite. With the general surprise, the guards of Hurricanes, Arturs Irbe and Kevin Weekes, hold out vis-a-vis the attack of Devils, managing to tear off two matches in Prolongation S and finally pass the turn in six matches. To the second turn, they are opposed to the Canadian of Montreal carried out by Saku Koivu which makes a return triumphing after having overcome a Cancer. During the fourth match of the series, the Canadians lead match 2 to 1 and the victory seems to be profiled at the end of the third for the fourth consecutive match. But it is without counting on the will of Hurricanes which manages to equalize then to gain the match during the prolongations by a goal of Niclas Wallin. Finally, Hurricanes gain the series and arrive for the first time of their history at the finale of the conference. Once again, Hurricanes do not leave favorite against the Maple Leafs Toronto and during the sixth match, in spite of a return of the Leafs to 22 seconds of the end of the prescribed time, via their captain, Mats Sundin, Hurricanes leave gaining confrontation thanks to a goal of Martin Gélinas. The team then meets finally Coupe Stanley the Red Wings de Détroit. All starts well for Hurricanes with a victory in prolongation with a goal of Ron Francis as of the first minute but the reaction of Red Wings is not made wait and the latter gain the four following matches. Hurricanes do all that they can to beat Red Wings and during the third match, one needs three prolongations to see Igor Larionov, to register the goal of the victory for Detroit
The following days are less festive for Hurricanes: during the two seasons the results do not follow and consequently occasion, the fans attracted by unexpected successes of the team ignore hockey and the multitude knows a significant decrease. The advantage of these missed seasons is like very often in the LNH, the privilege to choose in the first at the time of the Repêchages. Thus during the fishing out of 2003, Hurricanes choose the elder one of a family of talented players of hockey: Eric Staal
In same time, in December 2003, the direction of the team decides to separate from the former trainer of Whalers which accompanied them since all this time, Paul Maurice. It is then replaced by the former trainer of the Islanders of New York: Peter Laviolette. Weekes ensures what it can with aims of the team but defense is weak. The center, Josef Vasicek is the best striker of the team (19 goals), frontier runners (26 assistances with equality with the Staal young person) and consequently also the best pointer (45 points).
