Hurricane Claudette (2003)
The Ouragan Claudette is the cyclonic fourth phenomenon and the first Ouragan of the season 2003. It is the 5th use of the name Claudette for a tropical cyclone, after 1979,1985,1991 and 1997.
History
The July 7th, a system became tropical depression Claudette close to the Leeward Islands. As of the July 11th, it crossed the Péninsule of Yucatán and a few hours later turned over in the Gulf of Mexico to Puerto Morelos. Claudette took again force and touched ground one second time the July 15th on the island of Matagorda close to Port O' Connor (Texas).It then had the power of a hurricane of category 1 with a central pressure of 979 hPa and of the maximum winds of 145 km/h. It still remained of force of Tropical storm a day, unusually long for such a system which generally loses its energy source while entering the grounds.
Assessment
Claudette was responsible direct death for a person killed by the fall of a tree. It also caused a vast zone of damage by the wind with the Texas, in particular with Goliad. On the whole, one estimates the damage at 180 million $US (2003) with Texas but any significant with the Mexico.
