Hunze

The Hunze is a Rivière Dutchwoman of the provinces of Drenthe and Groningue.

Geography

Hunze is located at the east of the hills of the Hondsrug.

It is born with the confluence from the Voorste Diepje and Achterste Diepje , in the east of Gasselte. From this place until the Zuidlaardermeer, Hunze is also called Oostermoerschevaart , according to the historical Dingspel of Oostermoer which she traverses. Historically, this area is very marshy, and the original course of Hunze very sinuous and was located in the marshes. So no locality of Drenthe is really located on Hunze. So nowadays, the river touches almost the villages of Gasselternijveen and of Spijkerboor, it is that at these places, one modified the course of the river while cutting the original Méandre S.

After, Hunze arrives at the Zuidlaardermeer, lake which it crosses. On the other side of the lake, it continues its course under the name of Drentsche Diep , to throw itself in the Winschoterdiep close to Waterhuizen.

Between Winschoterdiep and the Damsterdiep, the river was ensablée during the centuries, and its old layout is only not easily recognizable in the landscape. In the north of the Damsterdiep, Hunze remains, but it is called there Selwerderdiepje.

From Wierumerschouw, the current lower course of Hunze is formed by the Reitdiep, of which the part between Groningue and Wierumerschouw corresponds to the artificial lower course of the Drentsche Aa.

History

All the lower course of Hunze was deeply modified during the centuries. Towards 1400, a stopping was established in Hunze, in the north of the Zuidlaardermeer, in order to deviate its water in the Schuitendiep. This channel had just been dug, inter alia with an aim of using deviated water of Hunze to increase the low water level in the channels of the town of Groningue. After, water of Hunze was also used to feed the new channel of the Winschoterdiep.

In addition to the control of the water level, Schuitendiep and its access to Hunze had as great advantage which the town of Groningue had from now on a direct connection with the Tourbière S of Drenthe, and thus the city could influence and control the trade of the Tourbe. Thus, the prolongation of the Schuitendiep in the center of Groningue is called Turfsingel , the channel of the peat ).

In spite of these rehandlings one can still recognize the old layout of Hunze, on air photographs and sometimes by certain elements in the payasage. After Waterhuizen, the river continued towards Oosterhogebrug. One sees his passage close to Oude Roodehaan. Between Oosterhoogebrug and Noorderhoogebrug, two enormous old Méandre S is very recognizable in the landscape. Beyond the Channel Van Starkenborgh, one sees nothing any more the river, from which the traces disappeared starting from Adorp. From there, it continait its sinuous course until Pieterburen, where it was thrown in the Mer of Wadden.

The area groningoise of Hunsingo car its name of Hunze, but today, Hunze does not traverse any more this area.
