Huntington is a Virginia-Western town of , the United States, along the river Ohio. It extends on the Comté from Cabell, of which it is the seat, but the district of Westmoreland is on the county of Wayne. In 2006, its population rose with: 49007 inhabitants. It is the second town of Virginia-Western after Charleston, the capital of the State. Densité : 627,9 hab/km ² (1 626,5 hab/mi ²). Its total surface area is of 46,6 km ² (18 semi ²). History
There existed since 1775 a village of the name of Guyandotte (today a district of Huntington). Huntington was founded in 1870 by Collis P. Huntington, which wished to build a stop on the way of the railway line Chesapeake and Ohio Railway (C&O). The line extended then from Richmond to the river Ohio. It was going to extend towards the east in direction from Newport News and towards the west until joining Cincinnati then Chicago. Huntington will be built-in 1871. It owes its development with the railroad and the coal mines of the area. It however was tested by the disindustrialization of the Années 1970. It counted: 86353 inhabitants in 1950. However, Huntington remains an important shopping mall, banking and medical.
Accident of the flight Southern Airways 932
November 14th 1970, 70 members of the football team of the University Marshall and 5 menbres of the crew, players, trainers and fans, disappeared in an air crash landing (flight Southern Airways 932). The plane, a McDonnell Douglas DC-9, was crushed with Ceredo. Each year, a commemoration in the honor of the victims gathers students and firemen come to deposit garlands close to the fountain from the university.The film We are Marshall , realized by McG and left in 2006, is inspired by this tragedy.
Transport
Huntington holds the largest river port of the country. That is due to the transport of coal and the fact that the refinery of Catlettsburg, Kentucky, load its products on barges.The Tri-State Airport, public airport located at the south of Huntington, also serves Ashland (Kentucky) and Ironton (Ohio).
