Hungnam
Hungnam (Hangeul 흥남구역, Hanja 興南區域, McCune-Reischauer: Hŭngnam-kuyŏk, revised romanisation: Heungnam-guyeok) is a port city located on the Eastern coast of the province of the Southern Hamgyong in North Korea, on the Mer of Japan (Korean: Sea of the East). It is distant only of 12 km of the town of Hamhung, located more inside the grounds.
Covering a surface of 250 km ², the town of Hungnam has a population of 200.000 inhabitants.
History
With the beginning of the year 1940, Hungnam was the site of the first known Cyclotron Asian. It was about one of the components of the Japanese atomic program, remained unfinished. After Japanese rendering in 1945, it was seized by the Soviet troops.During the War of Korea, the town of Hungnam was the target of a major air attack of the U.N. troops led by the United States on July 31st, 1950, during which more than 500 tons of bombs were released on the city. The town of Humhang was destroyed with more than 80% during the Guerre of Korea.
It is then since Humhang that were evacuated more than 100.000 soldiers of the United Nations and the civilians North-Korean in escape, at the end of December 1950. It is about one of more big operations of evacuations of troops by sea route of the military history.
Economy
A broad complex of artificial fertilizers is established in Hungnam. Rebuilt after its destruction by the Americans during the War of Korea, the most important factory of manure of North Korea account 5.000 workmen. Its production, fallen 850.000 tons in the years 1980 to 87.000 tons because of the energy shortage, knew a recovery in 2006 according to Philippe Pons of the daily newspaper " Monde".According to the globalsecurity.org site, Hamhung would shelter also factories of chemical weapons.
The area of Hungnam counts important layers in Uranium.
Education and culture
Hungnam shelters a university of engineers in chemistry.
