Hungarian Dances
The Hungarian Danses are a work of Johannes Brahms.
The interest of the musician for the Gypsy music was very early: as of the nineteen years age, it accompanied the violonist Hungarian Eduard Reményi through the Germany, which initiated it with the music of its country and Joseph Joachim presented to him. This one became his/her friend thereafter.
With the number of twenty-and-a, the Hungarian Danses were made up over several years: the six first were proposed as of 1867 with an editor, who refused them. The ten first appeared in 1869 in their version for Piano with four hands. The last were published in 1880.
They do not comprise a number of opus, the type-setter not considering them original works, but of simple adaptations of works of traditional Musique. It seems however that the topics of eleventh, fourteenth and sixteenth are completely original.
There are many transcriptions. Only the first, the third and it tenth were orchestrated hand of the musician. Antonín Dvořák made the orchestration of the five last. Brahms made an arrangement of the ten first for piano alone. His/her friend the violonist Joseph Joachim also made of it a version for Violon and Piano.
