Humfrey pelham

Pelham Humfrey ( Humphrey, Humphrys ), born in 1647 and dead the July 14th 1674, is the first Compositeur English of the new generation to shine, at the beginning of the Restauration.

In spite of its death at the 27 years age, he exerted a strong influence on his pars, even in his young age, including on Henry Purcell and John Blow. Its premature disappearance must be regarded as one of the greatest tragedies of the history of the English music; with its death it had already composed several poignant works and of a great expressive capacity.

At the 17 years age its Anthem S was obviously already played and it was sent by the king to study in France and Italy. It succeeded later Henry Cooke (his/her father-in-law)) as Royal Choirmaster and became also type-setter of the court.

The manner of getting dressed and the general behavior with Humfrey Pelham are not mentioned in its favor in the newspaper of Samuel Pepys. He writes: “The small Humphreys Pelham is a Mister absolute, full with forms, confidence and vanity, and disparages the talents of all, out his”.
