Humberto Coelho

Humberto Manuel of Jesus Coelho (born in Cedofeita, April 20th 1950) is a trainer and former professional player Portuguese of Football. In 1996, being one of the large titular players of the Benfica, he was proposed for the candidature for the presidency of the club, proposal which he refused besides.

Career of player

  • 1969-83 : (64 sélections/6 goals)

It was one of the best central defenders of Portuguese football, playing for the SSL Benfica, from 1968/69 to 1974/75, and 1977/78 to 1984/85. He also played for the Paris Saint-Germain, during seasons 1975/76 and 1976/77. He gained 8 times the Portuguese championship at the time of seasons 1968/69, 1970/71, 1971/72, 1972/73, 1974/75, 1980/81, 1982/83 and 1983/84.

In addition, Humberto counts 64 selections and 6 goals in team of Portugal between 1968 and 1983.

Portugal:

It did not have a big hit as a trainer, which started the surprise when it was selected to replace Artur Jorge like selector of the in December 1997 national team. It leads nevertheless its team until in semi-final at the time of the Euro 2000 when Portugal loses against France (1-2) in prolongations, thus finishing in the same place as with the Euro 1984.

Morocco:

It makes a short passage in Morocco as a national sport selector in 2002. It is replaced by Badou Zaki following the failure of Morocco to qualify itself out of world cup 2002 and elimination with the 1st tower of the cut of Africa of the nations of the same year.

: In 2003, Coelho succeeds Guus Hiddink. Subjected to an enormous pressure on behalf of the South Korean mediae which expected results of the same level as those of the preceding world cup, it leaves its functions after 15 matches of which the last vis-a-vis Maldives, although the team of South Korea gained the East Asian Cup in 2003.
