Humbert II of Italy

Humbert II of Savoy , also known under the name of Humbert II of Italy is the last king of Italy during 24 days of the May 9th to the June 2nd 1946, which is worth the nickname of Re to him di Maggio (" King de Mai"). It is also Duc of Savoy. It left Italy following the proclamation of the Italian République voted by Référendum by the people the June 2nd 1946 (born in Racconigi, Cuneo, the September 15th 1904 - died the March 18th 1983 in Geneva).

Biography

It is born the September 15th 1904 with Racconigi in the area Piedmont in Italy. Wire of the king Victor-Emmanuel III of Italy and of the queen of Italy, then empress of Ethiopia, queen of Albania Helene of Montenegro (girl of the king Nicolas Ier of Montenegro).

He marries in 1930 the princess Marie-Jose of Belgium, born the August 4th 1906 with Ostend, dead the January 27th 2001 with Geneva, girl of the king Albert Ier of Belgium and Elisabeth of Bavaria. The couple will have four children:

In April 1944, the parties antifascists ask for the abdication of the king Victor-Emmanuel III, which it September 8th 1943 had been folded up in the South of Italy with the government of the marshal Pietro Badoglio named after the fall of Fascism the July 25th 1943. The king refuses, on the other hand the June 5th 1944 it names his/her son Humbert general lieutenant of the Kingdom. Thus he will exert all the royal prerogatives, without having sovereign dignity. The May 9th 1946, his/her father, 77 years old, abdicates in its favor. 41 years old, Humbert of Savoy becomes king d' Italie during 24 days of the May 9th to the June 2nd 1946 under the name of Humbert II.

The June 2nd 1946, the Italy NS decide by referendum with 54% of the voices in favor of the republic. The June 13rd the king Humbert II leaves the throne without abdicating and is withdrawn with the Portugal, where since the June 6th his wife and her 4 children awaited it.

Humbert II of Italy dies the March 18th 1983 at the 78 years age to Geneva in Suisse. It rests with the royal abbey of Hautecombe, in Savoy, celebrates Nécropole dynasty of the Duché of Savoy and Maison of Savoy, at the sides of his wife. It had made gift with the the Vatican famous " Saint-Shroud of Turin ".

Its descendants, Victor-Emmanuel of Savoy and Emmanuel-Philibert of Savoy will be authorized to return in Italy only in 2002, following a law of revision of the Constitution of the Republic Italian, after 56 years of Exil.
