Human rights in Papua

This is a list partial of violations of the Human rights announced in the province Indonesia of Papua. A part of them comes from the report/ratio from Indonesian Human Rights Network written by Allard K Lowenstein International Human Rights Clinic from the Yale Law School. Although the visits of the province by the media are not encouraged, the list below is that of facts noted by a journalist who visited it in 2000:

  • 1966-67 : air raid in the mounts Arfak

  • Jan- March 1967: air raid of the areas of Ayamaru and Teminabuan
  • 1967: Operasi Tumpas (" Oblitération" operation;). 1.500 dead estimated at Ayamaru, Teminabuan and Inanuatan.
  • Avr 1969: air raid in the district of the lake Wissel (areas of Paniai and Enarotali); 14.000 survivors flee in the jungle.
  • May 1970: Massacre women and children by soldiers indonésiens. Witnesses tell to have seen a broken woman, her baby dissected on the spot and the sister of the collectively violated woman.
  • June 1971: Mr. Henk de Mari reports that 55 men of two villages of the north of Biak were forced to dig their own tomb before being cut down. Published in the Dutch daily newspaper " De Telegraaf " in October 1974.
  • unknown Date: 500 corpses of Papous found in the jungle in the district of Lereh, in the south-west of the airport of Sentani with Jayapura capital of the province.
  • 1974: in the north of Biak, 45 Papous killed, names and ages unknown.
  • 1975: in Biak, at least 41 people of the villages of Arwam and Rumbin are killed.
  • 1977: air raid of Akimuga (area of the mine of Freeport McMoRan).
  • 1977-78: air raid of the valley of Baliem.
  • Avr 1978 : 6 nonidentifiable bodies discovered in the district of Proportioned of Jayapura.
  • May 1978: 5 leaders of the CPM (Organisasi Papua Merdeka) go to save the village where they are surprised. They are beaten with died with heated iron bars with white and their bodies thrown in latrines. The 125 villagers are then grapeshots because suspected of sympathy to the CPM.
  • June 1978: 14 shot down corpses, in the west of the airport of Sentani with Jayapura.
  • June 1978: 6 collectively violated women, killed, then have the stuffed vagina of bay and sweet potato sheets once died because of suspicions of collaboration with the CPM. Village of Babuma, district of Kelila, Jayawijaya.
  • Juil 1978 : 122 people (116 men, 6 women) flee in the jungle, continued by soldiers indonésiens. The villagers are captured, their bound feet and fists, their bodies put in bags and jetés at the sea. Area of Merauke.
  • unknown Date: north of Biak, 12 people killed after having received the permission to leave the camp louse to collect sagou for a village f4ete.
  • 1981: 10 killed people, 58 missing without leaving of trace. Area of Paniai.
  • June-August 1981: Operasi Sapuh Bersih (" Operation Blow of Balai"), populations of the villages of Ampas-Waris and Beater-Arso passed to the bayonet and given up.
  • Sep-DEC 1981: an estimate of 13.000 people killed in the highlands of the center.
  • Juil 1984 : attacks naval, air and terrestrial village of Nagasawa/Ormo Kecil, 200 dead.
  • unknown Date: naval bombardment of the coastal villages of Taronta, Takar and Masi-Masi; survivors flee towards Jayapura; at the time Dutchwoman in 1950, each village had from 1.500 to 2.000 inhabitants.

  • : 2.500 people killed in the area of Paniai in the district of the lake Wissel, including 115 of the villages of Iwandoga and Kugapa massacred by soldiers the 6/24/1985; 10 people, the village, of the kitchen gardens and the cattle of the village of Epomani, under-district of Obano; 15 people, the village and cattle of the village of Ikopo, district of Monemane; and 517 people, 12 villages, of the kitchen gardens and the cattle of Monemane.
  • 1986-87: 34 killed people, Paniai/district of the lake Wissel.
  • 2000: Prison, Torture and Murder in illegal Jayapura for journalism
  • 2001: Theys Eluay, president of the CPM, is removed and assassinated by soldiers indonésiens.
  • 2002: the murderers of Theys Eluay receive a two years of prison sorrow.
