Geography
Provision :
The village of Hulluch is located on the RD 947 to 5 km of Lens and at 7 km of Based the, on old the Roman Voie (Arras/Estaires/Cassel). The frontier cities and villages are Wingles, Haisnes, Bénifontaine and Vermelles.
The village was formerly divided between the mining cities (pit 13…) close to Haisnes and a more agricultural part close to Bénifontaine. Separation remains today in the spirits one usually speaks about the " low of Hulluch" and of the " high of Hulluch".
History
The village existed already with the Gallo-Roman time. Potteries of this time were indeed found by digging the basement of a dwelling, close to the Roman way.
the Middle Ages
The village was certainly selected like Christian mission during the first centuries.
Occupied initially by the barbarians (the Morins, enemies of Jules César), it is it well by the Francs before the 10th century. The lord of the place made build a castle-fortress, simple keep and dependences surrounded by palisades and ditches. Today, there remain nothing about it. About the year 1300, the castle was surrounded by walls, crenels and turns. One entered there by a drawbridge. Set fire to with the village by Flemish in 1303 at the time of Philippe Beautiful the, bombarded by the Spaniards and the French at the time of Louis XIV, delivered to a succession of battles and invasions, the castle did not resist time and the wars.
It is certainly in the place of this castle-extremely that was built, under Louis XIV, the castle of the lord baron de Bertoult, richly decorated and surrounded by a beautiful park.
This castle, alas dynamited by German at the beginning of the First World War, is replaced by a called residential city in a very original way " Closed château".
the Seigniory of Hulluch
The seigniory of Hulluch, dependant on Châtellerie of Lens, was subjected to the assistances (kind of indirect taxes). The Colbert Collection holds a " enumeration of 1586" who attribute with this one: castle with farmyard, meadows, wood, water, fisheries, 160 mencaudées including 112 in culture and remainder at of laugh, more 1/3d' one marsh undivided between lord of Hulluch and those of Douvrin and Berclau, more finally communal mill (windmill where the peasants were to make grind their corn), a communal oven (to cook there their breads against the relatively modest annual rent of a capon by household).
During centuries, the seigniory knew several owners, by heritage, marriage and sale:
Oldest is known since 1252: Jehan I of Hulluhc , known as Li englais (English =l') which carried money to the engrêlée cross of azure . It is not known if this House continued becoming French or if it is a new house which is born in 1302 with: Jean II knight of Hulluch which carries quartered of gold and mouths , house which will perdurera until 1581, after a short interruption of 1386 to 1497, where it passes in the House of Villers then that of Hamaïde, before returning to Robert de Hulluch (Burgundian period where Jacques of Hamaïde, is wire of Ernoul, adviser and chamberlain of the duke of Burgundy; Jacques sells his ground in 1475 to Laurent Guignard, who must give up it since 1497 in Robert (certainly using of its right of pre-emption).
The family of Hulluch always exists with the 21e century, after having had various orthographies: of Hulluc or Hullut, Hullu, of Hullu, Dehullu, Dhullu, Dhulu and even of Read (in the USA).
She comprises currently less than ten people of the elder branch, always remained catholic and with less than 15-20 km of Hulluch, and constitutes one of the principal stocks families of Health where she was established since 1550, before settling v. 1880 in Gondecourt. The majority of the juniors by this house being Protestant emigrates of Health between 1695 and 1735 (following the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes) to settle in the Netherlands in the area of Cadzand and Terneuzen (2000 sea-green.), from there some leave to XIXè S. to Great Britain (200), others in Belgium (200) from where some return to France among the Belgian immigrants of between two wars. Other emigrants leave the Netherlands finally to the United States (end XIXè-beginning XXè S., where it takes the orthography " of Lues" , to avoid the difficulties of pronunciation to American).
The seigniory of Hulluch passes definitively then to other Houses, in 1600 in that of the lords of Noreuil, by the marriage of Damoiselle Marie d' Hulluch with Antoine the Draper. In 1613, their son, Francois, knight, wife Anne of Burgundy, to finish little before the Revolution in the House of Briois.
