Hullabaloo
the Hullabaloo was a French satirical illustrated newspaper published 1832 with 1937.
Founded in 1832 pennies the reign of Louis-Philippe Ier by the republican journalist Charles Philipon (1800 - 1862), it quickly becomes means of communication of the opposition. He ridicules with spirit the Monarchie of July and the middle-class and was often condemned by the courts.
Charles Philipon was the author of the famous caricature of Louis-Philippe in the pear shape, appeared in November 1831 in the Caricature , another newspaper rested by this caricaturist and contractor of press. This caricature was worth a lawsuit with the newspaper, which it lost. The newspaper thus announced the legal decision on first page, with text in the pear shape.
Its popularity is very important both in France and abroad since in Great Britain the newspaper Punch is founded on the same model and is subtitle The London Charivari .
The newspaper knows a revival of popularity under the Second Empire and it also at that time covers the Art S, the Littérature and the Théâtre. Its opinions were then rather preserving and it is in the Hullabaloo that Louis Leroy, which was critic there art, made appear in 1874 a critical article towards the impressionist which was to give them their name.
Philipon, itself artist, does not hesitate to promote the use of the new techniques of graphic reproduction in engravings as well as the Lithographie and in fact great use in the newspaper. This one employs to 20 artists among whom:
- Cham, which scoffed there, inter alia, the impressionists
- Honore Daumier, who introduces to it his character of Robert Macaire
- Paul Gavarni, who caricatures Parisian life there
- Grandville, with his drawings of anthropomorphic animals
- Nadar, celebrates it photographer, was there also caricaturist
the Hullabaloo survived until in 1937.
