Hugues of Cluny

Saint Hugues of Cluny (1024 - 1109), is the sixth Abbé of Cluny, of 1049 with 1109. Its festival is the April 29th. It is sometimes indicated like " Hugues Grand" or " Hugues de Semur" , and was canonized by the Catholic church like Hugues saint the Large one. It was one of the principal leaders of one of the monastic orders most influential of the Middle Ages.
It is resulting from an aristocratic family of Châtelain S, related to the Carolingiens and perhaps with the Capétien S. His/her father is Dalmace Ier, Baron de Semur (in Brionnais) (1020-1068), of which the name (" Dalmatius") is of Gallo-Roman stock, and resulting from Brioude. The Barons de Donzy in Resident of Nevers, the Damas, Lords de Cousan in Drill, the Counts of Chalon… etc. are his/her parents.
Entered with the monastery at the 15 years age, named prior at 20 years, it is, at 25 years, the abbot of a Monastère become chief of Order of a monastic empire (the order of Cluny) wide of England in Poland and Germany in Italy and Spain. It was formed by its predecessor, Odilon of Cluny.
It built the abbey 3ème of Cluny, greatest construction in Europe during several centuries. Hugues was the principal craftsman of the monastic movement clunisien during the last quarter of the 11ème century. The relation between Hugues and Ferdinand Ier and Alphonse VI of Castille, like its influence on the Pope Urbain II, which was before its election prior of Cluny under the abbatiat of Hugues, did of Hugues one of most powerful and influential figures of the end of the 11ème century. Moreover, like godfather of Henri IV emperor of Germany, it also played a part in his conflict with the Pope Gregoire VII during the Querelle of the Nominations. He refused the offer of William the Conqueror to reform the Saxon monasteries.
