Hugues V of Burgundy
Hugues V of Burgundy (born in 1294 - died the May 9th 1315 with Argilly), duke of Burgundy of 1306 with 1315, titular king of Thessalonique of 1306 with 1313.
Hugues V of Burgundy was elder surviving children of the duke of Burgundy Robert II and of Agnès of France. Grandson of Saint-Louis by his mother, he was still child with died of his father, the March 21st 1306, and reigned under the supervision of his mother, during his minority. Hardly major, he died, leaving of his reign the so short only memory of his brilliant reception like knight.
Very young person, it was promised in marriage to Catherine II of Valois-Courtenay (1303 † 1346), titular empress of Constantinople, girl of Charles of France, count de Valois, and of Catherine de Courtenay, but to died of Catherine de Courtenay in 1307, Charles de Valois realized that it did not have of wire and which Catherine II was the heiress of the title of Latin emperor of Constantinople. Charles de Valois preferred to have a son-in-law able to reconquer Constantinople and undertook to make break engagement. Hugues ends up giving up its been engaged in exchange of broad compensations:
- It would have been promised in marriage to Jeanne de France (1305 † 1347), girl of the future Louis X of France (This assertion appears however doubtful, because this one, was the girl of its sister Marguerite, and thus its niece!)
- his/her sister Jeanne accepted the ground of Courtenay, and marries Philippe, wire of Charles de Valois.
- his/her brother Louis is married with Mathilde de Hainaut, heiress of the principality of Morée
The October 9th 1305, Hugues is made Pair France. Philippe IV Beautiful the armed it knight in 1313. He died two years later. Eudes IV, his/her brother, took at once possession of the duchy.
