Hugues III of Cyprus

Hugues III of Lusignan , born in 1235, died in 1284, king de Chypre (1267 - 1284) and of Jerusalem (1268 - 1284), wire of Henri of Poitiers-Antioche and Isabelle de Lusignan (ascent).

In 1264, with died of his/her mother, he became regent of Cyprus in the name of his cousin Hugues II. This last died the December 5th 1267 and Hugues succeeded to him on the throne. It was an intelligent and conscientious prince who was badly rewarded for his efforts. He inherited the throne of Jerusalem and in vain tried to tear off it with anarchy, but could not overcome the opposition of the barons d' Acre and Templiers, favorable to Charles of Anjou. Moreover, the Cypriot barons refused to follow the king to Syria, if not for very limited durations and Hugues had to give up Acre in 1276. He died in Tyr the March 26th 1284.

He married Isabelle d' Ibelin (1241 † 1324), girl of Guy d' Ibelin, marshal and constable of Cyprus, and Philippa Berlais, and had:

  • Aimery II of Lusignan (1275 † 1316) constable of Cyprus
  • Marguerite de Lusignan (1276 † 1296), married in 1288 with Thoros III, king d' Arménie .
  • Guy de Lusignan (1278 † 1303) constable of Cyprus
  • Alice de Lusignan (1279 † 1324) married in 1295 with Balian d' Ibelin
  • Helvis de Lusignan, married to Héthoum II, king d' Arménie.
  • Isabelle de Lusignan (1280 † 1319) married to Constantin de Neghir, lord of Partzerpert († 1308), then with Oshin Ier, king d' Arménie.
