Hugo von Hofmannsthal

Hugo von Hofmannsthal (1874, Vienna - July 15th 1929, Rodaun, Austria) is an Austrian writer and one of the founders of the Festival of Salzburg.

Hugo Laurenz August Hoffmann von Hofmannsthal was born with Vienna within a family, of partially Jewish origin (by his/her father), of recent aristocracy and whose fortune was strongly reduced following the economic crisis of 1873. It publishes its first poems at the sixteen years age under the pseudonym of Loris. This literary precocity, like its later abandonment of the poetic form, will make it compare with Arthur Rimbaud.

Hofmannsthal meets the German poet Stefan George at seventeen years (they will be scrambled in 1906) and sees its poems appearing in the Blätter für die Kunst , newspaper that George directs. Starting from 1892, it follows studies of right while publishing the same year a lyric drama Der Tod of Tizian ( the Death of the Titien ) and a year later Der Tor und der Tod ( the Insane one and Death). In 1895, it directs towards studies in Romance Langues at the University of Vienna. At its exit of the university in 1901, Hofmannsthal chooses to continue its literary career started already well and makes appear its dramatic study Gestern ( Hier ).

Under the influence of the novel methods of Freud psycho-analyzes and from Nietzsche, it from now on will concentrate on ancient topics, élizabéthains or catholic tradition.

Then Hofmannsthal meets the type-setter Richard Strauss with whom it will collaborate to write several booklets of opera, first for Elektra ( Electra ) in 1909, and Der Rosenkavalier ( the Knight with the pink ) in 1910 then for others: ARIANE with Naxos , Die Frau ohne Schatten in 1919 ( the Woman without shade ), Helene of Egypt and finally Arabella .

In 1912, it adapts Everyman an English part of the 15th century in Jedermann ( Each man ). With the assistance of max Reinhardt, Hofmannsthal founds in 1920 it from now on celebrates Festival of Salzburg where it makes play Jedermann regularly.

Hofmannsthal died in Rodaun in the outskirts of the city of Vienna the July 15th 1929, embanked by an attack at the time when it took the head of the funeral procession of his son, who had committed suicide under his eyes two days before.
