The cyclone Hugo of 1989 is most violent Cyclone which the the Antilles knew since scientific observations are carried out. The Guadeloupe, more precisely, was in the middle of the phenomenon.

Chronology

  • September 11th, 1989:
A traditional depression is formed into full Atlantic Ocean.
  • September 13rd with 1:00 GMT:

The depression is reinforced and become officially tropical storm. She is baptized Hugo.
  • September 16th:

The eye of the Hugo cyclone passes into full on the Guadeloupe. The atmospheric pressure recorded on the eye-level of the cyclone is of 941 hPa. The moderate wind is of 200 km/h and the gusts of wind reach 280 km/h and with more 300km/h raised in Raizet (airport): the Hugo cyclone is described as class 4.

The damage is considerable: 23 dead including 13 in a helicopter of help (after the passage of the cyclone). 21000 people find themselves without shelter and the cost of repairs will rise with more than 120 franc million.

  • September 19th:

The Hugo cyclone moves towards Puerto Rico: the gusts of wind are there of 200 km/h.
  • September 21st:

The Hugo cyclone extends from the South Carolina until the Canada and it dies out the next day.

As the habit for the fatal cyclones wants it, the Hugo cyclone of 1989 will be the last to bear this name.
