Hughes AN/ASG-18
The Hughes AN/ASG-18 is a prototype of radar of control of shooting developed at the origin for the Intercepteur XF-108 Rapier for the United States Air Force by Hughes Aircraft Company.
An/ASG-18 was the first Radar Doppler with impulse (using the Effect Doppler) conceived with the the United States and having capacities to draw to the bottom same if it could track only one target at the same time. The range of this radar is estimated between 320 and 480 km. The installation of the system was massive weighing 950 kg and occupying the majority of the nose of the plane. The radar was to be used with the missile Hughes AIM-47 Falcon on the XF-108.
Whereas the development was carried out on the XF-108, an/ASG-18 and the Falcon missiles were initially tested on a bomber Convair modified B-58. To install the radar, the nose of the apparatus was lengthened of almost 2 m and the infra-red sensors were assembled on with dimensions ones of the fuselage. Only one missile was installed under the fuselage in a special nacelle.
The program of the XF-108 was cancelled before the first flight of B-58 equipped with a AN/ASG-18 and the program of the Lockheed YF-12 was developed with the place to use the couple radar/missile. Tests were led between 1960 and 1963 on the modified version of B-58, then on the YF-12 until in 1966 and the complete cancellation of the program.
