Hubert Robert
Hubert Robert , born with Paris the May 22nd 1733 and dead the April 15th 1808 with Paris, is a Paysagiste, aquafortist, Dessinateur, painter French.
Biography
The father of Hubert Robert, Nicolas Robert, was with the service of François Joseph de Choiseul, marquis de Stainville. This relation was used the career as Hubert Robert. It followed traditional studies at the Jésuite S to the Collège of Navarre between 1745 and 1751. He studied at Michel-Angel Slodtz, which taught the perspective to him and the Dessin and decided it to turn to the Peinture. In 1754, it left for Rome, with Etienne François de Choiseul (wire of the employer of its father), recently appointed ambassador from France to Rome.Hubert Robert spent eleven years to Rome, one remarkably long period for an young man without official station with the Académie from France to Rome. He met the collectors and the artists (inter alia, Piranèse, who had a great influence on him). Although not having gained the Price of Rome, it was authorized to join the boarders Palais Mancini. It met there the young person Jean Honoré Fragonard, and the abbot of Saint-Not, a distinguished amateur who ordered to them drawings of Italian cities, antiquities and works of art in order to publish them. The abbot of Saint-Not took along Hubert Robert to Naples in April 1760 to visit the excavations of Pompéi, which fed its Capricci (imaginary landscapes).
On its return to Paris, in 1765, it met a fast success among the eminent personages of the kingdom as well as the artistic and intellectual elite. The following year, it was approved and received by the Royal Academy.
Appointed successively Draftsman of the Gardens of the King, Keeps tables of the King, Garde Museum and adviser with the Academy, he was charged to arrange certain parts of the royal residences, such as the hamlet of the Queen with Trianon. It also arranged the gardens of Méréville for the Marquis de Laborde and of Ermenonville for the Marquis of Girardin.
During the Revolution, it is stopped in October 1793. Held the Prison Holy-Pelagie and the Prison Saint-Lazare, it survived it while painting on plates of the scenes of prison life, before being released with the fall of Robespierre. It found then a certain notoriety and was seen in charge of the installation of the new national Museum.
Hubert Robert died of Apoplexie the April 15th 1808.
During the last years in Italy, it accumulated drawings and sketch of landscapes in ruins, from where its nickname of “Robert of the ruins”. Its paintings show poetic interpretations of landscapes, sights of Rome, Paris, and Île-de-France. It also painted imaginations, for example the large gallery of the Louvre in ruins. It made also sketches according to nature (and of the tables in workshop) of the fire of the Hôtel God (in 1772), and of the demolition of the Pont Notre-Dame. It exposed regularly to the Salons of Louvre, and liked to work for the collectors and the aristocrats.
The museum of Valence and that of the Hermitage with Saint-Pétersbourg preserve an important collection of drawings and paintings of Hubert Robert.
