Hubert Horatio Humphrey II (May 27th 1911 - January 13rd 1978) was mayor of Mineapolis, senator democratic of the Minnesota, 38e Vice-président of the United States of 1965 with 1969 under the mandate of Lyndon Johnson and candidate with the presidency in 1968 against Richard Nixon.
Studies
Hubert Humphrey was born the May 27th 1911 in Wallace, county of Codington in the South Dakota.
He undertakes studies of pharmacy at the university of Denver, and follows this occupation with Huron in South Dakota of 1933 with 1937.
Then he moves in the Minnesota or he follows courses of political sciences, without however having time to take down his doctorate. For this reason in 1969, the university of Minnesota will refuse to let it teach!
During the Second world war, Hubert Humphrey deals with the industrial production of his State.
Political ascendance
In 1944, Humphrey takes an active part in fusion between the democratic party of Minnesota and the workers party and peasant to form Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party (Labor and country Democratic party, DFL).
After a first failure in 1943, Humphrey is elected mayor of Mineapolis in Minnesota in 1945, then largely re-elected in 1947.
It is made known by creating the Americans for Democratic Action , political organization promoting the liberal ideas (or of left to the American direction of the term).
At the democratic Convention of 1948, it delivers a speech in favor of the civic rights, plunging the preserving democrats of the South (Dixiecrat S) in anger: “ has those which say that the program of the civic rights is in contradiction with the right of the States, I say that time arrived at the United States for the democratic party to leave the shade of the right of States and to turn finally to the luminous glare of the human rights. ”
The same year, Humphrey is elected Democratic senator of Minnesota, posts to which he will be re-elected in 1954 and 1960. With the Senate, it is one of the burning defenders of the liberal causes, like the civic rights, the control of the weapons, the end of the nuclear tests or the assistance with the developing countries.
In 1960, it is presented to the democratic primary educations for the presidential election, but is beaten by John F. Kennedy.
Vice-president of the United States
In 1964, President Lyndon Johnson designates it as fellow candidate, and the democratic ticket is easily elected vis-a-vis the republican tandem directed by Barry Goldwater.
If the installation of the reforms putting an end to the segregation is a success, Humphrey is criticized for its honesty towards Johnson in connection with the Guerre of Vietnam.
In 1968, Humphrey is presented successfully to the democratic primary educations against candidates opposed to the war of Vietnam like Robert Kennedy, George McGovern or Eugene McCarthy.
But a campaign too on the left and the dissidence of the preserving Democrat George Wallace (which will gain all the States of the Old South) cause the defeat of Hubert Humphrey and his fellow candidate Edmund Muskie, with 500.000 votes of delay on the republican candidate Richard Nixon however.
End of a career
After its defeat, Humphrey becomes professor.
Whereas it did not hope to return in the policy, a combination of circumstance pushes there. Eugene McCarthy, Senator of Minnesota, carrying out that it with very little chance to find his seat at the time of the elections of 1970, decides not to be represented.
Humphrey decides to be presented. He is elected, and again in 1976 will be it.
In 1972, it is presented to the democratic primary educations, but is beaten by George McGovern.
In 1976, it tries to be elected Majority Leader (chief of the majority party to the Senate) but is beaten by Robert Byrd. However, the Senate decides to create for Humphrey the position of president pro in time.
The August 16th 1977, Humphrey reveals that it is reached of a cancer in final phase. President Jimmy Carter gives him the command of Air Force One for his last voyage for Washington DC.
Hubert Humphrey dies the January 13rd 1978 in his house of Waverly, in Minnesota.
