Hubert François Gravelot
Hubert François Burgundian , known as Gravelot , born the March 26th 1699 with Paris where he died the April 20th 1773, is a Illustrateur, engraver, Dessin ator and painter French.
Poor pupil, Gravelot tries the voyage from Rome before being constrained, fault of resources, returning to Paris without to have been able to exceed Lyon. After the failure of a business transaction with Holy Domingue where the envoy his father, he becomes the pupil of Jean II Restout then of Boucher.
In 1732 with London, Gravelot goes where its illustrations influenced the English artists and where Gainsborough was its pupil. The feelings anti-French started by the Bataille of Fontenoy in 1745 bring back Gravelot, which revivified the engraving of illustration in England, to Paris, where it does not have any difficulty in find to occupy its talents.
It illustrates Décaméron (1757), the News Héloïse (1761), the moral Contes of Marmontel (1765), the Metamorphoses of Ovide (1767-71), Jerusalem delivered of the Tasse (1771), etc
Gravelot was also distinguished in the illustrations and the Rocaille S which it had carried out for cabinetmakers, tapestry makers and ironmongers.
Gravelot was the brother of the geographer Jean-Baptiste Bourguignon of Anville.
