Hubert Aquin
Hubert Aquin was a writer and Intellectuel Québécois born with Montreal the October 24th 1929 and died with Montreal the March 15th 1977.
Graduate of the University of Montreal in Philosophy in 1951, it continues his studies with the Institut of political studies of Paris of 1951 with 1954. On its return to Montreal in 1955, it is engaged like realizer and scenario writer for the television of Radio-Canada (1955 with 1959). Then, of 1959 with 1963, he is realizer and producer with the National office of the film.
Militant for the Independence of Quebec, He is executive member of the Rassemblement for national independence of 1960 with 1968. In 1964, it publicly announces in a letter with the newspaper the Duty which it takes “the maquis” and is made “ ordering Organization spéciale ” with an aim of joining its forces to those of the Face of release of Quebec. One month later, it is stopped, on board a stolen car, in possession of a firearm. On councils of its lawyer, it pleads madness momentary (cowardice which it will reproach later) and four months in a psychiatric hospital are interned. It is at the time of this stay that it begins the writing of its most known novel, Prochain episode , (published in 1965 in Montreal, then in 1966 in Paris and translated into English in 1967 in Toronto), which tells the history of an imprisoned revolutionist.
Of 1961 with 1971, he is director of the literary review Liberté . During the Years 1970, it teaches in various North-American universities, of which the Université from Quebec in Montreal. In 1975, he is engaged as a literary director with the Editions the Press. He loses his item later one year.
The March 15th 1977, it commits suicide in the gardens of the college Villa Maria in Montreal. It had three fils : Philippe and Stephan, with her wife Therese Larouche, and Emmanuel Aquin with its second joint, Andree Yanacopoulo.
The Hubert-Aquin house of the Université from Quebec in Montreal (built of 1975 to 1979) is named in its honor.
