Hubert-Pascal Ameilhon

Hubert-Pascal Ameilhon , born with Paris the April 7th 1730 and died in 1811, is a French historian and librarian.

It starts its career of librarian to the library of the Town of Paris. Impassioned traditional antiquity, it publishes in 1766 a Histoire of the trade and navigation of the Egyptians who is crowned by the royal Académie of the inscriptions and the humanities, of which it is elected member in 1786. It writes last eight volumes of the unfinished Histoire of the Lower Empire left by Charles the Beautiful. It publishes many historical reports, among which Éclaircissements on the Greek inscription of the found monument with Rosette . He is writer with the Suite of the Key, or historical Newspaper on the matters of time during several years until in 1776, then directing of the Journal of agriculture, the trade, arts and finances of 1778 with 1781. He is also member of the royal Société of agriculture.

Acquired with the Revolution, Ameilhon is named member of the Commission for the conservation of the monuments of arts and sciences in 1793. Having managed to convince the authorities of the need for preserving in the name of the people the books confiscated at the institutions of the Old Mode, with the religious congregations and the particular libraries, it saves dilapidation and destruction more than 800.000 volumes. Many these works find their place with the Bibliothèque of the Arsenal, whose Ameilhon organizes the collections and of which it is named director in 1799.

  • History of the trade and the navigation of the Egyptians, under the Reign of Ptolemées (1766)
  • History of the Lower Empire by beginning in Constantin the Large one with Charles the Beautiful (volumes XXII to XXIX, 1781-1817)
  • Explanations on the Greek inscription of the found monument with Rosette, containing a decree of the priests of Egypt in the honor of Ptolémée Épiphane, the fifth of the kings Ptolémées (1803)
