Hryvnia
The hryvnia (code ISO UAH - in Ukrainian, гривня, pronounced in API) is the monetary currency of the Ukraine since the September 2nd 1996, date on which it replaced the Ukrainian Karbovanets at the rate of a hryvnia for 100.000 karbovantsiv. The hryvnia is subdivided in 100 Kopeck S (singular: копійка kopiyka ; plural: копійок kopiyok ).
History of the Ukrainian hryvnia
Historically, the hryvnia is a copper part of 2,5 kopiyka (Kopeck S), and the hryvenyk a silver coin of 10 kopiyka used at the 11th century in the Rus' of Kiev.
The Republic of Ukraine (1917-1920)
At the end of the First World War and after the Russian Revolution, the Ukrainians proclaims their independence and creates, as of the June 18th 1917, the Popular republic of Ukraine. The Ukrainian Karbovanets was initially selected like new national monetary unit. A first ticket of 100 karbovantsiv (plural), drawn by the Ukrainian artist Heorhii I. Narbut is issued as of the December 19th 1917.The Ukrainian national Republic (UNR) will be recognized by France and Great Britain in January 1918, and declares its independence on January 22nd 1918. For political reasons, the law of introduction of the new monetary unit emitted by the Verkhovna Split, on March 1st, 1918, founded the hryvnia with a parity of 1,2 karbovanets.
Tickets of 2,10,100,500,1 000 and 2.000 hryvnia were put in circulation since 1918.
The Soviet socialist Republic of Ukraine (1920-1990)
The catch of Kiev by the Bolsheviks as of their victory involved one period extremely animated with the maintenance in circulation of the karbovanets Bolshevik wanted by the Soviet authorities in the occupied country.The Soviet socialist Republic of Ukraine finally adhered to the Soviet Union in 1922 and adopted the Soviet Rouble like monetary unit.
The second Republic of Ukraine (1991-at our days)
August 24th, 1991, the Ukraine declared its independence again and adhered to CEI. February 1st, 1991, a referendum on independence is organized and approved with more than 90%. The Ukrainian Karbovanets, coupon of exchange, replaced initially the rouble since 1992. But this currency undergoes a strong inflation, following economic crisis period which followed.In 1996, thanks to the favorable evolution of the nation's economy, the Ukrainian karbovanets was stabilized compared to the principal international currencies. The conditions became favorable to the introduction of the new monetary unit in agreement with the national constitution.
The order in Council on the monetary reform in Ukraine was published the August 25th 1996 (articles 99 and 102) and the transition took place between the 2 and on September 16th: the foreign exchange rate set up was of 100.000 karbovanets Ukrainian for a hryvnia. Consequently, the hryvnia became the only legal means of payment in Ukraine
This monetary reform was capital for the Ukraine and was the starting point of the stability of the Ukrainian economy.
According to article 99 of the constitution of 1996, the central bank is the national Banque of Ukraine (НаціональнийбанкУкраїни) and its main mission is to guarantee the stability of the currency.
Others
Its code ISO 4217 is UAH . Its numeric digital code is the 980, its official abbreviation hrn (into Cyrillic: грн ). Nevertheless, in 2004, the national Bank obtained the standardization of a new symbol, based on the Cyrillic letter” lower-case ““Ge г” (which in the Ukrainian alphabet is worth and not and is called “He”), the initial one of the Ukrainian name of the currency in italic гривня and increased (it resembles then a S reversed), with two horizontal bars (synonymous with stability) similar to those of the Euro (€).

Banknotes
Tickets: 1,2,5,10,20,50,100 and 200 hryvnias.Its name is very old since it was already the name of the national currency of the Rus' of Kiev at the 11th century. It should not be confused with hrivna, name of a female ornament - identical to the Russian translation of the name of this currency.
