A howto (of the English how to = how to make) is a Document, often short, describing how to carry out certain tasks. They are generally created with an aim of helping the least tested. Thus, in a will of simplification, they put side certain details reserved to the experts. One finds a big number of howtos or “minis-howtos” for the realization of certain tasks under Linux.

The translations of HOWTOs (in particular HowTo of installation by Rene Cougnenc) had a determining role in the initial diffusion of Linux in France. They are currently carried out by the volunteers of the group traduc.org .
