It had to stop its career following a serious accident at the time of the Grand Prix of Japan where it fractured the two ankles.

Biography

Ganley discovers the automobile competition at the 14 years age when it attends its national Grand Prix on the circuit of Ardmore. In 1961, whereas he is apprenti-mécanicien, it expatriate in Great Britain in order to be exerted his talents in the beds of Formule 3. In 1967, it decides to pass on other side of the barrier and acquires a Brabham BT21 with which it begins its career from pilot. With few means, it takes down the podium at the time of the disputed test with Oulton Park then, in 1968, it is classified 2nd in Denmark. Always Formulates 3 of them, in 1969, it signs two pole positions and takes down a better turn in race.

In 1970, it passes in Formula 5000 on a private McLaren. It is classified vice-champion of the discipline behind Peter Gethin. This honourable performance enables him to be approximate by the stable BRM and to be committed in championship of the world of Formula 1. It does not profit however from the same statute as its fellow-members within the Yardley TEAM BRM , OJ Siffert and Pedro Rodriguez have a BRM P160 while it has only one P153 of the former season.

In 1971, Ganley makes its first weapons out-championship where it disputes seven tests. It finishes 2nd International Gold Cup and is classified 4th with the Jochen Rindt Memorial and with the Spring Trophy . It cannot fully honor its first engagement in championship with the world at the time of the Grand Prix of South Africa because it is suffering. He manages to qualify himself in penultimate position on the grid but must give up, with end of forces, the semi-race. As of the following Grand Prix, in Spain, it receives the flag with checkerworks in 10th position, with four turns of its Rodriguez leader who finishes with the foot of the podium. Ganley does not manage to tear off its qualification for the selective test Monegasque but is repurchased in Zandvoort where it is qualified in 9th position on the starting grid, just behind its fellow-member OJ Siffert. Ganley finishes with the door of the points, but BRM marks however thanks to Rodriguez, second. Always at the wheel of old P153, Howden Ganley finishes in the first part of the classification in France (10th) and in Silverstone where it is classified 8th. It is constrained with the abandonment on mechanical breakdown at the time of the two following tests and BRM, conscious that P153 is from now on breathless, entrusts to him P160 for the Grand Prix of Italy. Ganley in fact of continuation good use while qualifying itself in 4th position with 12 hundredths of Siffert and far in front of Gethin and Helmut Marko, this one profiting only from one P153 frame. The race is quite as satisfactory for the young pilot who registers his first points in the category-queen. This race will remain in the history for its final extremely tight, Howden, 5th, finishing only with 61 hundredths of the winner, his fellow-member Peter Gethin. Victim in Canada, the New Zealander makes his return for the GP of the United States to Watkins Glen and emphasizes himself again. 12th on the grid, it is 7th with the 35e turn and 4th with the 53e, it preserves its place until the arrival, at 16 seconds of Siffert which reaches the second walk of the podium. In nine departures, Ganley took down 5 points which, if they enable him to point with the 14th rank of the championship pilots, especially ensure him to preserve its bucket at BRM the following season.

In 1972, Ganley takes gallon within stable BRM since, at the beginning of the season, it profits from a frame P160B, like Peter Gethin, while its fellow-members, who will change often during the year, have only one P153. Ganley is classified 9th front its fellow-member Helmut Marko with the inaugural Grand Prix in Argentina but does not manage to be classified at the time of the following test, in Kyalami where it finishes with nine turns of the winner Denny Hulme. The Spanish test is a true disaster for the British stable since none of the five committed single-seaters receives the flag with checkerworks. To Monaco, Ganley leads the P180 news but qualifies itself only in 20th position whereas Jean-Pierre Beltoise and Gethin, at the wheel of P160, is qualified respectively in 4th and 5th place. Ganley is obliged of surconduire to go back to the classification, it manages to reach the 17th place before giving up on accident. It is necessary to await the Grand Prix of Germany to see the New Zealand pilot taking down his first points. On large Nurburgring, it points only in the 18th place on the grid, at fifteen seconds of the poleman Jacky Ickx but carries out a race of any beauty, practically gaining a place with each turn to finish with the foot of the podium. Being the first of pilots BRM to the classification of the test, it thus makes it possible its stable to register three new points with the championship of the manufacturers. It still marks a point at the time of the following test, in Austria where, there still after a poor qualification, it gains nine places in race to collect the point of the 6th place (for its account and that of its stable). At the end of the season, Ganley, with 4 points and the 12th place with the championship cannot claim to preserve its place at BRM which prefers to him Clay Regazzoni and Niki Lauda. It is comforted this mitigated season Formulates 1 of them by being classified second of the 24 hours of Mans where it controlled a Matra Simca MS670 with François Cevert.

In 1973, Ganley in search of a wheel finds refuge within the modest stable of Frank Williams, Iso-Rivolta. The single-seater, FX3B, are in fact only one modest evolution of the Politoys committed FX3 the former season with the Grand Prix of Great Britain. Its only originality is to resemble at the same time a Tyrrell 001, a BRM P160 and a March 711 whole while not having any qualities of these single-seaters. At the wheel of this kit-because " of occasion" reconditioned, Ganley does not manage to be classified at the time of the inaugural Grand Prix in Argentina, finishing with 17 turns of the winner Emerson Fittipaldi. But, as of the following race in Brazil, whereas it is very far on the grid, it finishes with the door of the points with only one turn of the winner. The news Iso-Rivolta IR makes its appearance leave the Spanish test, but it is necessary to await the penultimate race of the year, in Canada on a softened track, so that Ganley does not register its first and single point, thus imitating its fellow-member Gijs van Lennep in the Netherlands.

In 1974, again without wheel, Ganley takes refuge at March. It has a new frame 741, just like Hans Stuck while James Hunt remains faithful to the 731 of the former season. The first Grand Prix of the season is concluded from manner cocasse for the " kiwi" who break down from gasoline in the last but one turn, the same mishap arriving at regional of the stage Carlos Reutemann with his Brabham. In Brazil, Ganley is constrained with the abandonment at the beginning of race on problem of lighting. At this point in time Howden makes a decision at the very least surprising by leaving March to launch out in the adventure Maki. This new Japanese stable has just been created thanks to the sums of money of Kenji Mimura and with the blow of pencil of Masao Ono. F101 has a frame monoshell out of aluminum on which comes to be grafted an engine Cosworth V8 DFR but suffers from a ponderal overload which handicaps Cosworth. Maki must make its beginnings in Monaco but the stable declares finally fixed price, the single-seater not being finalized. The first turns of wheels take place to the Grand Prix of Great Britain where Ganley carries out the 32e time of the qualifications at four seconds of the pole of Niki Lauda whereas the starting grid accepts only 25 competitors. At the time of the following race, on large Nurburgring, Ganley is victim of a rupture of suspension which causes a violent exit ramp and breaks the two ankles to him: the pilot will go up never again in a single-seater of Formula 1.
