Howard Kay Gloyd
Howard Kay Gloyd is a American herpetologist , born the February 12th 1902 with De Soto (Kansas) and dead the August 7th 1978 with Tucson.
Its interest for nature is encouraged by his/her mother and it is, at twelve years, an accomplished taxidermist. It makes its studies with the Université of State of Kansas during one year and off obtains with the Université of Ottawa its Bachelor Sciences in 1924. He teaches biology in this university until in 1927 year when he leaves to teach the Zoologie with the faculty of agriculture of the university of Kansas. In 1928, it makes appear off The Amphibians and Reptiles Franklin County, Kansas . In 1929, it off obtains its Master Sciences in this school with a thesis on the reproduction of the snake Agkistrodon contortrix .
It stay during the summer 1925 at the biological station of the University of Michigan and meets Frank Nelson Blanchard there (1888-1937). This last will direct its doctorate which relates to the Crotale S. In 1936, it becomes the director of the Academy off Sciences of Chicago, function which it preserves until in 1958. It makes off appear in 1938 Snakes the genus “Tantilla” in the United States .
In 1939, he becomes off the vice-president of the American Society Ichthyologists and Herpetologists. In 1940, it makes appear its thesis Rattlesnakes, generated “Sistrurus and “Crotalus”. With study in zoogeography and evolution (republished in 1978). It organizes many forwardings in Arizona to collect specimens for the Academy of Chicago. Of 1940 with 1947, it is consulting for the research service of Natural history of the State of the Illinois. In 1942, it obtains its doctorate at the university of Ottawa. It makes appear in 1942, with Frank Nelson Blanchard (1888-1937), Boxing ring-neck snakes, genus “Diadophis” and in 1943, Synopsis off the American forms off Agkistrodon (copperheads and moccasins) . In 1958, he installen in Arizona where he gives courses and is researcher associated with the department with zoology with the Université with Arizona with Tucson. In 1974, it takes its retirement and becomes professor emeritus of this university.
The herpetologic Company of Kansas has an annual purse named in honor of him and Edward Harrison Taylor (1889-1978).
