History

Complete summary

It is about an account on a space forwarding sent on a planet of the star Bételgeuse. The members of the crew discover a company there where Singe S dominate of the human ones. They will end up understanding that the human ones had been formerly the dominant species, fallen in decline until becoming slaves of the monkeys. The physicist will be massacred and the professor will fall into a wild state while the hero, Ulysses, will remain prisoner in the monkeys. He will become acquainted with Nova. Using guenon chimpanzee, Zira and of promised in marriage sound, Ulysses and Nova will succeed in fleeing with their Sirius son and setting out again on Earth, whereas several millenia were passed since the departure of forwarding. They discover whereas the monkeys also took the place of the men on Terre.
The book is in fact the account of the adventures of the hero who is read by Jinn and Phyllis, a couple of chimpanzees, which find quite incredible these stories of human intelligent.

Characters

  • Ulysses Mérou:

Journalist, it takes part in the Expédition on Bételgeuse. It is the hero of the novel. It is able to escape thereafter with the assistance from Zira and its promised in marriage.

It is the chief of forwarding. But it loses the reason at the time of its first contact with the Singes.
  • Zira

Guenon, it saves Ulysses Mérou. She works in the same laboratory as Zaïus.
  • Zaïus

Orang-outang which does not believe in the fact that the men can have a heart nor a spirit.
  • Cornélius

Erudite large chimpanzee, promised in marriage of Zira.
  • Nova

A woman of the Soror planet which will have a child with Ulysses Mérou.

Animated series

  • 1975 : Return to the Planet off the Apes : animated series of the United States in 13 30 minutes episodes diffused between the September 6th and the November 8th 1975 on the network NBC. It diffused forever in France.

Cartoon

The series is adapted to the United States following the success of film by the editions Marvel. In France the adaptation will be published to the editions Lug with original covers painted by Jean Frisano.

Notice

In the adaptation, the monkeys are not presented with a technological level are equivalent to those of the human ones. In the book of Pierre Swell, the monkeys have a serious delay compared to the time of the hero: this is justified by the incapacity of the primates to make another thing that " singer" human civilization which they succeed, without really developing it: their civilization is that contemporary of the author (the monkeys have cars and play golf).
