Some general remarks

  • How to marry a millionaire was the first film carried out in CinemaScope but the distributed second, the first having been the tunic ( The Robe ) (first on September 16th, 1953) also produced by Fox, with Richard Burton and Jean Simmons in the main roles. The goal of this news Technologie was to counter the Télévision whose popularity was each day stronger with the the United States.
Le Slogan of film was The modern miracle - special You see without glasses (the modern Miracle - You do not even need special glasses).
La first scene of the film, which lasts nearly 5 minutes, does not have any bond with the history and is satisfied to show (and make listen of course) a symphony orchestra in all its… width, a demonstration of the roomy ultra screen (the film begins finally after 7 minutes from music and credits!). Other scenes in film play this same part: some sights of New York, the apartment of the three friends which seems thus immense, a Panoramique of the forests of the Maine, a landing seen since the cockpit… One will notice also, and not without reason, the absence of close-ups, the Cinemascope having a distorting effect in this kind of proximity.
  • One cannot say that, in this intrigue, the Femme S are presented under their best day. The three friends are opportunist, interested, covetous and make pass the money with large a $ before the love with a large A. In this comedy which is resulting from the light comedies and of which the tone is good child, they are however opportunist sympathetic nerves, touching interested women and they fall finally in love men without the penny, or supposed the being.
  • Cameron Mitchell, which plays the part of Tom, the millionaire taken for a pump assistant, interprets the voice of Jesus in the tunic (1953). It is not mentioned with the generic of this film but it will have thus taken part in both very first films in Cinemascope.
  • the film was named for several rewards but did not gain any of those: Oscars 1954, better color film costumes, Charles the Mayor; Writers Guild off America (association of the American scenario writers) 1954, better scenario of comedy, Nunnally Johnson; price BAFTA ( British Academy off Film and Television Arts Awards , price of the British academy of arts of the cinema and television) 1955, better film.
  • One amusing situation " culturelle". At does two times in film, the character interpreted by Marilyn Monroe evoke a You know what they say butt girls who wear glasses? (You know what one says of the girls to glasses?). And the French-speaking spectator of second half of the twentieth century to be a little surprised and curious about the answer which will be given. The American answer comes: Men aren' T intended to girls with glasses (the men are not interested in the girls which carries glasses). Ouf!

Lauren Bacall

  • Lauren Bacall, 28 years during this turning, was already a star who aligned with his prize list following films: the Port of the anguish (1944), the Big sleep (1946) and Key Largo (1948), all played in company of his/her husband Humphrey Bogart.
  • D'ailleurs, when the character of Schatze in How to marry a millionaire with J.D. how much it confirms prefers the men in the force of the age, it argues a " Look At that ol' cracked, what' S his name? In The African Queen. Crazy butt him! " (For example this old type, how it is called? That which plays in the African queen. I am insane of him!)

Betty Grable

  • Betty Grable was 36 years old during the turning of How to marry a millionaire and had been during the Second world war one of the most popular stars of the musical comedies, in particular near GI. Its career went decreasing as of beginning of the year 50, which one feels in this film where it does not have the most interesting role of the three.
  • In the country cottage of Maine, it says to recognize the musician Harry James with the radio (but it is mistaken). Harry James was her husband at the time.

Marilyn Monroe

It is about the 21e film of Marilyn Monroe which is 26 years old and, now that it is a star (since the Niagara), who makes equal share with Betty Grable and Lauren Bacall since it is located at the 2nd place of the generic (in the American Bande-annonce, it is even quoted in first, as on the poster, and it seems that is due to the fact that Betty Grable had had words with Fox). She plays a mannequin, more short-sighted there than a mole and large vain because she does not like to carry her glasses. Obviously, its scenes and sequences are of importance:
  • Marilyn appears at the 10th minute, whereas Lauren Bacall has just invited it to announce to him that it unearthed an apartment. Marilyn runs up against the doors and people when it does not carry its glasses. The three friends discuss the men and their plan.
  • Marilyn, out of dressing gown, and Lauren papotent when Betty Grable announces a good news to them.
  • At the restaurant with its one-eyed conquest, in a grinding dress of color sharp fuchsia (which was immortalisée in a very known photograph, that with four reflections in mirrors). Then all in the ladies room to comment on their respective successes.
  • In an Arabic dream, receiving grinds jewels.
  • At the time of a fashion show in a bathing suit one-piece bathing suit bright red, with the presenter who introduces it of a " Diamonds are has girl' S best friends " (diamonds are the best friends of the woman), which is the title of a song drawn from preceding film of Marilyn: the Men prefer the blondes (1953).
  • the meeting with Mr Denmark on the aircraft after two drive out-crossed in housing.
  • With the final festival, Marilyn returns to announce that it is married.
  • a last scene in a fast-food. Now it carries its glasses, definitively.
With the following actors, it will have divided the poster of How to marry a millionaire and:
