Houte-if-Plout

Houte-if-Plout is a Hameau condruzien of the Belgian commune of Neupré (Province of Liege). It is located on the road going down from Plainevaux towards Esneux and is sprinkled by the brook of the Martin Fund (of the name of the first miller), being thrown in the Ourthe.

It Houte-if-Plout in Wallonia, spelled several others there Houte-if-Plout , Hout-if-Plout , Xhoute-if-Plout or Xhoute-if-Plou .

In French-speaking Belgium, the name of Houte-if-Plout, sometimes spelled Houte-if-Ploute (what for this last is a pronunciation different from the true toponym, probably by effect of ryme), just like Gingelom, returns to an unknown place, even imaginary, even if several places bear indeed this name. Gingelom also exists.

The place gave pretext to creation in 1995 of the Université of Houte-If-Plou.

The equivalent in Dutch-speaking Belgium is Bachten de Kupe. This name refers to an area located in Western Flanders, between the Breakdown, Nieuwport and Dixmude, Furnes and Alveringem. Bachten de Kupe is used in Dutch as synonym of " end of the monde" or " I do not know où" or to indicate a nonaffected place by modernity.

History

The mill of Hoûte-i-Ploût appears in 1559 in a small valley located on the territory of the Seigneurie of Esneux, with the borders of the Principauté of Liege and the Duché of Limbourg.

Etymology

The expression Hoûte-if-Ploût (listening if it rains) refers to the use of the water mills. It was about one mockery for submission to the miller awaiting the rain, and the water flow while resulting, to put itself at the work.

Houte-if-Plout of Belgium has indeed jointly to have lodged a Water mill.

The popularity of this locality is very old. It was in particular created an opera called Li fièsse di Hoût if Ploût , written in 1757 by Jean-Christmas Hamal and Pierre-Gregoire de Vivario, played the December 8th 1757 for the first time in the living rooms of the Town hall of Liege.

In Walloon standardized, the hamlet spells and Hoûte-i-ploût as a good Walloon inhabitant of Li2ege.

The expression also finds through all the France, such for example Escota if plau in the Béarn or Escoute if it stud in Ardèche. For further details, to see Escota If Plau

In French of Belgium, Hout-If-Plou, just like Gingelom, renvoit with a vague place, to see imaginary. These two localities however exist.
