Household refuse

The household refuse (initials OM), or household waste are the Déchet S resulting from the daily activity of the Ménage S.

Definition

They also include, in general, the Déchet S of the tradesmen and craftsmen who follow the same processing circuits. The composition of the household refuse is very varied; One finds there in particular organic matters putrescible (possibly compostable in the gardens upstream of the circuits of collection) and of many materials resulting from packing: glass, metal, plastic, paperboard…

The collecting and the treatment of the household refuse constitute one of the essential public services. Organized by the local government agencies, it often justifies specific Taxe S.

Quantity

This category of waste is in regular increase since many years.
As example, their current production (source ademe 2004) in France is close to 353 kg per capita and per annum.

Quality

In an approach of the bearable type Development, the household refuse could or owe thanks to steps of écoconception upstream, being very easily which can be recycled and to some extent which may undergo beneficiation (compost, valorization-matter) or énergétiquement which may undergo beneficiation (methanisation), Incinération with recovery and valorization of the Calorie S (in Heating network for example).

The rate of valorization increases, but with very variable proportions according to the areas of waste leaving in Décharge or towards the incineration, and whereas the quantity of waste/inhabitant strongly increased. One of the problems is that this waste, often still badly sorted contains quantity significant with important of Toxique S; thus, in 1993, a study it showed for France that on average the household refuse contained the Eutrophisant S or Polluant S following.
