House of the Temple
Geographical description
The house of the Ordre of the Temple to Paris was the chief town of the province of France and the greatest commandery of France. It was built apart from the rampart of the city, on old marshes, the current district of the Marais, that Templiers made drain. This Commanderie and its accesses was called the " Villeneuve of Temple" in opposition with the Old Temple, the very first house which Templiers had in Paris.
Description
The enclosure of the Temple included/understood imposing a Donjon, a vault, and various buildings surrounded by a high wall. It was the central bank of the order as well as the deposit of the royal treasure in France. Let us note that the house of the Temple with London had the same function for England.Napoleon Bonaparte made demolish the Tour of the Temple in 1808. The demolition lasted two years. Today, there remain nothing of this enclosure and the buildings.
History
Three street names evoke the presence of Templiers in Paris: the Street of the Temple, the Street Old woman-of-Temple and the Street of the Servites (3rd and 4th district for the two first, 4th for the third). In the same way the Boulevard of the Temple and the subway station Temple contribute to the evocation of the district always called " of Temple" , like its market hall called " Square of the Temple ".
