House of the Balsam
Originating in the Bresse, this family was one of most considerable of this area, having “not very common prerogatives of honor”, of “marks of size which meet seldom elsewhere”. The Maison of the Balsam had as weapons: “Of gold, with the vivrée band of azure”.
It gave two cardinal-archbishops of Besancon, two large-Masters of the principal rafters, two marshals of France, a marshal and an admiral of Savoy, a regent of Savoy and a tutor of the count Aimé IV, a viceroy of Naples, seventeen governors and lieutenants of province, two knights of the Ordre of Saint-Michel under Louis XII and François {{1st}}, two of the Ordre of the Holy Spirit, four of the Ordre of the Golden Fleece and four of the Ordre of Annonciade.
Among its members appear in particular Jean of the Balsam, Nickel silver-Spirit of the Balsam (1679-1740) and Florent-Alexandre-Nickel silver of the Balsam (1736-1794).
