House of education of the Legion of honor

The houses of education of the Legion of honor are French secondary schools created by and intended, at the origin, the education of young girls from which the parents, grandparents or great-grandparents were distinguished by the Légion from honor.

History

The Décret of creation of the houses of education of the Legion of honor is signed by with Schönbrunn the December 15th 1805. This decree envisages the creation of three houses. The Château of Écouen is selected like first school and the emperor gives itself the broad outlines of the education which he wants to get to the young girls: “Raise us believing and not of the arguers” the March 25th 1809, sign the Décret of creation of a second house in the Cloître of old the royal abbey of Saint-Denis. At that time, there were many military colleges to educate the boys and to make to brave men future soldiers of them, but the girls were forsaken. created these houses of education to provide for the education and the needs of the girls (very often orphan) of its soldiers more deserving and to make of them good wives and mothers of future soldiers.

Article R 122 of the code of the Legion of honor: “The purpose of the education given in the houses of education is to inspire to the pupils the love of the fatherland and freedom as well as the direction of their civic and family duties and to prepare them, by their instruction and the formation of their character, to secure a worthy and independent existence. ”

The houses of the legion fall under the prolongation of the royal Maison of Saint-Louis created by Madam de Maintenon.

Admission requirements

The houses are public corporations, laic and for young girls (there exists a catholic and Protestant chaplaincy for the practicing pupils). The places are reserved:
  • with the girls, grand-daughters and back-small-girls of members of the Legion of honor
  • with the girls, grand-daughters and back-small-girls of holders of the Military decoration
  • with the girls, grand-daughters and back-small-girls of the members of the National order of the Merit
  • with the girls and grand-daughters of foreign legionaries (after consultation of the large Master).

Boarding school

All the pupils of the Houses of education of the Legion of honor are boarders, and the boarding school is also open the weekends. Each pupil of the secondary must have a “correspondent” living in Paris region, which will be charged to come to seek it when it leaves the house, in particular in weekend.

The pupils of the classes post-vat have the choice between two modes:

  • the boarding school with a payment softened (left free)
  • the “external boarding school”: the pupil takes his evening and lunches in the establishment but resides with-outside.

Uniforms

The port of the uniform is obligatory. This one knew the many ones during the years last reforms date of the return to school 2007.Il consists of a dress navy blue and a belt whose color indicates the level:
  • Green for the 6th
  • Violet for the 5th

  • Dawn for the 4th (Orange)

  • Blue for the 3rd

  • Nacarat for the 2 (Red)

The belt is carried in shoulder-belt for all the classes.

The uniform of the " Post-Bac" , i.e. for the pupils of the literary preparatory class and BTS, is the same one for all:

  • Tailor navy blue

It is frequent to designate by Métonymie a pupil of the secondary cycle by the color of its belt: “green” or “the blue ones”.

Teaching

The teaching exempted in the houses follows the programs of state education. The professors are detached from the Minister of education main road near the large chancellor.

On each level, there is a class of control, where the pupils have a thorough teaching of the Chant choral, Musique and various musical instruments. The houses have several music studios where the pupils can practice their instruments apart from the hours of teaching. The pupils maîtrisiennes give concerts, sing at the time of official ceremonies and give each year the Concert of the president in one of the two houses, to which assists the president of the Republic or its representative.

The various sections are Littéraire (L) (speciality English, German, visual arts, music, Spanish (LV3), Russian (LV3), Greek, Latin, maths), Scientifique (S) (speciality maths, ground or Life sciences, physical chemistry), Economique and social (ES) (speciality English, German, maths, economic scenes and social) and STG (speciality communication).

Houses of education

The houses of education are under the direct authority of the large chancellor of the Légion of honor. The denomination of the stations is different from the establishments of state education there:

Each class is followed throughout the year by in charge of education (although the function is opened to the men, it has there only women who occupy these stations). In charge one of education (still called educational lady ) deals with its class apart from the courses: during the studies, at the time of the meals (which are been used for table in the refectory), at the time of the extra-curricular exits (visits of museums, concerts, voyages of class, etc)

Écouen

The Château of Écouen is the place where the first house of education was installed. The first re-entry takes place there in November 1807 under the direction of Mrs Campan (former reader of the girls of Louis XV then first chambermaid of Marie-Antoinette) named the September 5th 1807.

In 1814, Louis XVIII returns the castle to the Condé which more or less leave it with the abandonment starting from 1830. During this period, the house of education is transferred street Barbette to Paris.

In 1850, Louis Napoleon reinstalls the house of education there.

In 1962, the large Chancellor of the Légion of honor places the castle at the disposal of the Ministère of the cultural Affairs, so that it accommodates the National museum of the Rebirth.

Saint-Denis

Inaugurated on July 1st 1811, Saint-Denis is placed under the direction of Madam of Bouzet. The house accommodates today, in the Cloître of old the royal abbey, 500 pupils of Lycée of the 2 of with final as well as the classes of Hypokhâgne, Khâgne, and BTS of international business.

Cabins

To its first re-entry in 1811, the house the orphan ones of the Légion of honor of the Cabins is directed by Madam de Lezau (higher of the Congrégation of the Mother of God). In 1814, Louis XVIII removes the houses of orphan, but the house of the Cabins remains and becomes a house of education like Saint-Denis and Écouen. In full heart of the Forest of Saint-Germain-in-Bush hammer, close to the camp of the Cabins, old the Couvent of the Augustins accommodates today approximately 450 pupils of Collège.

Anecdotes

In 2002, a particular accent is put on the commemoration of the bicentenary of the Légion of honor: at the time of the Ravelled of July 14th, certain pupils of the house of education of the Legion of honor formed a gigantic legion of honor Place of the harmony to Paris opposite the presidential platform. Their families and they were then invited by the large Chancellor of the Legion of honor to dining with the Juniors by Westpoint - also present at the time of the procession at dining in the living rooms on the Military academy in order to admire the drawn fireworks on the Champ de Mars.
