House of Vergy

The Maison of Vergy is one of oldest French noble families the, known since the 9th century (even 7th).

Castle of Vergy

The castle of Vergy, considered impregnable, was located on a rocky outcrop close to Beaune, in Burgundy (common current of Reulle-Vergy, the Pond-Vergy and Curtil-Vergy). The first establishment of a fortress on this place would date from the Roman epoch. Shaved in 1609, it remains about it only little of traces.

Lords

The first lord of Vergy at the 7th century

The first lord of known Vergy is Guerin (Warin) of Vergy , brother of holy Leger. Ébroïn made it lapidate towards 674 with the foot of the rocky outcrop of Vergy, little time before the martyr of its brother.

First house of Vergy (9th-9th centuries)

The first house of Vergy would however occur at the 9th century with Warin Ier de Vergy , or Guerin, (760 - >819), which was count de Chalon and of Mâcon, then count d' Auvergne (818).
  • Manassès Ier de Chalon (v.875-918), count de Chalon, of Beaune, of Auxois (887-918), lord of Vergy (893-918) and Langres (894-918), his/her son
Towards 910, Manassès and his Walloon brother of Vergy, bishop of Autun, based the abbey of Saint-Alive on the site of Vergy (of which the monks, five hundred years later, will plant the piece of vine of Romanée-Conti). The relics of Alive Saint were placed there, protected from the contemporary invasions Normans]] At the 12th century, Vergy is regarded by Louis VII as most impregnable of the fortresses of the kingdom. The pope Alexandre III would have found refuge in there 1159. It is at that time that is built the Saint-Saturnin church, still visible today. In 1185, the duke of Burgundy Hugues III of Burgundy, wanting to force Hugues de Vergy (1141-1217) to pay homage to him, besieges it for eighteen months, but in vain; Philippe-Auguste makes raise the seat the following year
