House of Sweden
The House of Sweden or Colleges of the Swedish students , is one of the 37 houses which constitute the Cité international academic of Paris.
Inaugurated on December 1st 1931 in the presence of the future king Gustave VI Adolphe of Sweden and the President of the Republic Paul Doumer, the foundation is one of smallest City. After renovatebeing entirely renovated in 1994, it counts 43 rooms and two studios. In the process of admission, it respects the principle of the cultural mixing of the City, and accommodates a certain number of the French students or other nationalities.
Since the beginning, the House of Sweden organized “cultural evenings”, at the time with writers like Jules Romains and André Maurois, later with the novelist Michel Butor, the journalist André Fontaine and the tenor Jussi Björling. During a certain number of years, the director of the House also functioned like the director of the office of the Swedish Institut in Paris.
Today, the evenings count the traditional festivals as as well as concerts and exposures. The festivals of Holy Lucie (December 13rd) and the Nuit of Walpurgis (April 30th) are observed each year.
The first House of Sweden is known as to be created in 1291 like Collegium Upsalienses , with 12 places for young students of theology of the diocese of Uppsala come to the Sorbonne. At the beginning of the 12th century there will be also two colleges of the dioceses of Linköping and Skara.
