House of Maine
Counts of Maine
Several families followed one another the head of the county of Maine. Although the two first were savagely enemy, current research tends to show a common origin. One of them, that of the Rorgonides, disappears at the beginning of the 10th century, but several medieval families could be attached to this family.
Counts of the 8th century
Roger appears as count of Mans into 710. With died from Herlemond, bishop of Mans, into 724 Roger benefits from the holidays of the episcopal see to manage the episcopal fields. It had three children:- Herve, count of Mans following his father,
- Gauziolène, bishop of Mans, and
- Rotilde, abbess
From an onomastic point of view, these counts are located in the family group of the Robert whose branch will become the Robertiens.
Unfortunately for them, Herve and Gauziolène will take the party of Grifon in revolt against his half-brother Pépin the Brief. Overcome, Herve will be relieved, while Gauziolène will see its reduced capacities.

Rorgonides

One century later, the count Rorgon will see himself entrusting the counties of Rennes (into 819) and Maine (in 832). He is at the origin of a family of counts of Maine which will hold the county until 898. The presence in its family of first names (Gauzlin, Gauzbert, Gauzfred) having a common root with that of Gauziolène, as well as the presence in their entourage of three counts of the first name of Herve lets think that Rorgonides result in fact from the counts of the beginning of the 8th century.
Being itself several times revolted against the Carolingian kings and not having succeeded in ensuring the defense of Maine against the Viking S, the county was withdrawn to them to be entrusted to Hugonides.

Initially in favor of the Carolingian and enemies of the Robertiens, Hugonides will change alliances and will be among the first of vassal of Robertiens. They will benefit from the minority of Hugues Capet for émanciper of this suzerainty, and the family will hold Maine until 1062.
